It was announced last night at the meeting of the Southwest Washing ton Citizens' Association that a stat ment urging prompt action in secur ing an appropriation for a new Jef terson Junior High School had heen sent_to District Commissioner Sidney F. Taliaferro, the members the Roard of Education and several other persons connected with the schools ef Washington. The letter was drawn up by a joint committee represent the Citizens' seiation and Parent-Teacher associations o southwest section of the city at 2 cent meeting. It was pointed out that the appropr ation had been recommended by th Commissioners last year, but neve. theless had been dropped from the bill that was passed. Attention v ted to the fact that the building, which is 55 years old, was condemned in 1908 by a congressional committee, which recommended a new school in'a more suftabie locatfon. It is said the pres ent structure is overcrowded, having five portab Its front is on the railroad tracks and it adjoins a freight According to the staterent, coal s from engines, not move than 75 vards away, often blows in the win the the re dows in such quantities as to be nauseating. There is almost no play ground, no gymnasium, and the as sembly hall is on the third floor, and is claimed to constitute a fire haza: Site Is Proposed. The letter proposed as a suitablc site for a new building the ground that is bounded by Eighth, Water and H_ streets southwest. The message, which was read by M. Shaffer, chairman of the schools committee, gave as a further reason for asking for the new school that there had been ne addition to the white school facilities in the southwest under the five-year building program, with the exception of the Russell School, which had previously been abandoned by the colored children. Mr. Shaffer declared that the com- mittee intended to canvass the section to determine the site for the new buld- ing that is desired by the majority of the citizens, although no opposition is expected to the locatian recommended. George M. Yeatman, the associa- tion’s delegate to the federation, termed the fight of varlous organi- zations of the city on the Citizens’ Ad- visory Council as being nothing but jealously. Mr. Yeatman, who also is chairman of the committee on police and fire protection, in his report gave high praise to the work of the police. of the fourth precinct, and especially to their captain, Charles E.
