In an interview here yesterday Mr. Page pictured the tremendous task of rebuilding many miles of trackage and restoring more than 30 bridges on the Central Vermont line alone. At present, he said, there than 1,500 men working day and night to re-establish main line traffic on the Central Vermont, which runs through devastated areas in the northern and central sections of the State. A partial estimate of the total dam- age to all railroads in Vermont was given by Mr. Page as: Rutland Rallroad, $500.000 to $1,- 000,000; St. Johnsbury & Lake Cham- plain Railroad, $900,000; Montpelier & Wells River Railroad, $525,000; White River Railroad, $300,000, and the Springfield, Vt., terminal, $125,000. NEW BILLS TO INCREASE LIFE OF PAPER MONEY Civitan Club Told Smaller Cur- rency Will Last Longer Because of One Fold. The average life of currency will be increased from 9 to 11 months, due to the reduction in size of the bills, Alvin W. Hall, director of the Bureau of En- graving and Printing, said at a lunch- eon of the Civitan Club in the Lafay- ctte Hotel Tuesda The longer wear of the new size bilts will be due principally, he said, to the fact that they will he folded only once instead of twice, as at present. Mr. Hall also emphasized the sav- ing in the cost of printing the new currency, stating that 12 of the mew bills can’be printed on a machine in place of only 8 of the old. He also de clared that more than 400 tons of ink and more than the same number tons of paper will be saved. Through a co- ordination in the printing of the front and back of the new bills they will be harder to counterfeit, he added. John N.
