THE EVENING STORY Mince Pi ALVINA WARD was happy. She sang as she stood at her kitchen table rolling out pie- crust. The sunshine came into the small, neat room, the canary chipped seeds and twittered, the geraniums bloomed redly. And the oven was just right. Malvina had tested it by putting her hand in. Malvina was making mince pie and she was doing it beautifully. With a knife she cut a fern leaf on the evenly rolled out dough that was to be the cover, then she fitted the cover on and crimped the edge with a fork. When she had cut away the unnecessary dough from the edge she thought that the pie was as perfect as she could make it. “A lot depends on the baking,” she sighed. “Well, good luck go into the oven with it,” and she shut the door upon it. Then she sat down to watch its baking and crochet a bit on her pil- lowcase lace. Malvina’s hands were always busy. “I" hope Lulu will like it,” she thought. “She is so fond of mince pie. As soon as I get it baked so I can be sure that it will be all right TNl run_over and ask her. I don’t usually have pie for supper, but this is an unusual occasion.” Malvina was a small, pink woman with gentle eves full of blue childish- mess that instantly indicated her in- genuous simplicity. Life had dealt rather miserably with her, taking everything she had loved away from her and substituting something that would answer, but was not nearly so good. For instance, she had married Obidah Ward, when she wanted Syl- vanus Gardner. She had lost her own child and had been obliged to have in its stead a nephew of Obidah, a rascal who no sooner than Obidah was dead ran away and left her. All her life she had wanted Delia Burman_ as her friend, but for some reason Della did not take to her, and so_she had had to do with Lulu Soper. Lulu was well enough, but she wasn't Delia. The pie came out of the oven crisp, sizzling, fragrant. Joyfully Malvina flung a shawl over her head and ran across to Lulu's. Lulu sat toasting her large feet and stroking her little dog that had crept up on the arm of her chair. e “What's the excitement she in- quired as Malvina appeared. “I want you to come over to sup- per, Lulu. I've got something I know you'll like.” Lulu laughed happily, leisurely. She was a big, soft, sleepy-eyed woman, a widow like Malvina, but very well provided with worldly goods. “I bet it's mince pie,” she said. “All right. I'll come. When do you want me?” ‘Any time you get ready.” Malvina was happier than ever. She flew home and arranged her tabl 3 clipped all her geranium blossoms to make a little bouquet. She creamed potatoes and sliced_meat and opened & jar of peaches. Lulu loved to eat. Afterward they would sit by the fire with their crochet-work and talk. Lulu would tell about Mrs. Bright, whom she admired very much, and how she had bought this or that, or done some- thing or other. Malvina did not care for Mrs. Bright, but she didn’t mind having Lulu expatiate-on the woman. “I should think Lulu would come,” she thought. *“I can't think what keeps her.” She looked anxiously from the window. ‘“Maybe she has fallen or something. I guess I'll go over and see.” Again she threw the shawl over her head and ran_acro to the Soper house. A dim light showed within and she heard Pluff, the dog, yapping, but when she tried the door it was locked. The door was locked! As she stood wondering what it ®I1 meant a woman who was passing called to her. “Lulu isn't there, Mrs. Ward. I just met her at the corner of Wright and Whitcomb streets. She was hur- rying to Mabel Bright’s. Mabel had asked her to dinner and she said she didn't get the telephone message in time to fix up as she wished.” “Oh!” Malvina found she could speak. “All right then, Mrs. Hood,” It came to her that she had no ap- petite for supper, that she could not touch the mince ple. She would give it away, but who was there in the neighborhood who_served a heavy meal at night? Nobody but Delia Burman as far as she knew. She wrapped up the ple and, carry- ing it carefully, again set forth. .She had to cross through the snow and go down the other side to Delia Bur- man’s. She went round to the kitchen door and knocked. Della came to the door. She was a tall, vigorous woman, with clear, dark eyes. “Why. Malvina!” she exclaimed. “Come in. What you got there?" “I've brought you a mince ple,” Mal- vina sald, tremulously, setting her of- fering upon the kitchen table. “Why, that's nice of you, Malvina.” There was no mistaking the pleasure in Delia's aceptance of the gift. “My family are crazy over ple of any kind and I didn’t get round to make one today. I had company come unex- pected. Now, Malvina, you take off that shawl and stay to supper. Don’t say you can't. I won't hear it. If you attempt to go away I'll lock the door and hide the key.” She took the shawl away from Mal- vina and hung it in the closet. “You always do look so neat, Mal- vina,” she said. “Now come and see who's In the sitting room.” She led Malvina into the cozy room, where a tall man sat chatting with John Burman. “‘Here’s Malvina Beach, Sylvanus,” Dylia said. “And I think you'll agree ari?h me, she hasn’t changed a par- cle.” Sylvanus Gardner shook Malvina by both hands. “I made Delia promise to take me over to see you right after supper,” he said. “It does seem good to see you —and all the folks I used to know.' The sup) was a go mented the meal with ice cream and (Continued from Yesterday's Star.) “His Excellency does us too much honor. Our motives may occasionally have been in question but the diplo- matic game has many aspects and various rul Perhaps - some time I should like to sit in again, but this {_lm. I shall play the cards as they ie.” Farewells were said and Dane walked away across the lawn with his distinguished guest from Wash- ington while Janet turned to Lord Kingsmere. “No wonder when I met you here I thought there was something familiar about your appearance! I did not place you at first as the kind Amer- ican tourist who, with his wife, picked me up outside the convent and took me to Marseilles! And to think that the Hon. Lucille Ravenshaw should have been Lucy, my maid! I'd like to know how she acquired that accent! The other girl blushed and laughed. “You slipped away from me very neatly at the station!" she remarked. “To think that you carried on a flirta- tion with' the red-headed young man under my very nose on the train: Philip will have to be careful!” THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D fruit. When it came to Malvina mince ple the praise grew almost noisy. Malvina was enraptured. It seemed like a dream to be seeing Sylvanus again after so many years. She could not see that he had changed. “Sylvanus’ wife died a year ago. I guess he's come back to look him up another one,” Delia told Malvina as they washed the dishes. Sylvanus walked home with Malvina after a delightful evening. He car- ried the empty pie tin, They met Lulu returning and stopped to speak to her. “Mrs. Bright phoned for me. I knew you wouldn’t care,” Lulu said. Tt's all right,” Malvina laughed. Sylvanus squeezed Malvina's hand on his arm. “Everything’s all right with Mal- vina always,” he said. “Even if it isn’t she makes the best of it. You missed a good mince ple, Lulu, and maybe you'll never have another chance to eat one of Malvina's, I'm going to take her back with me when Tgo” gAt that Instant he dropped the mince ple tin. And it jangled on the hard stones like wedding bells. THE END. (Coyright, 1927.) .. ASKS DIVORCE HEARING. Plaintiff Urges Speedy Trial of Case in D. C. Courts. Mrs. Coula Gotsis, 1018 Eighth street northeast, yesterday asked the District Supreme Court to hasten the trial of her suit for a limited divorce from Louis Gotsis, who conducted a tatilor- ing establishment at 817 H street northeast. Mrs. Gotsis says the strain of living in the same house with her husband and not being on speaking terms with him is too much for her and their five children. She wants the husband to leave the house or provide THE BLACK BY ISABEL OSTRANDER. “I intend to be!” Philip asserted stoutly. “However, we should none of us have gotten out of Norman's clutches on the island if it had not been for Sayre! Major Ethelbert Sayre Montford cleared his throat, but before he could utter-a disclaimer Janet exclaimed: “No! We owe everything to him. Major, I thought they had shot you when you dove out of the lifeboat and disappeared in the fog! “I reached shore and got the federal service out after that pirate cutter, but they didn’t capture her till after she had landed you on the island. I traced her movements by sheer luck, she called and returned home. The festive outlay of her little supper mocked her as she looked upon it. Lulu had turned her back upon Mal- vina’s mince pie for the sake of Mrs. Bright’s fricasseed chicken.” She had no doubt it was fricasseed chicken. Another woman would have been uproariously angry, but Malvina was only hurt. She stood beside her kitchen stove, twisting her hands and trying not to cry. “How silly I am,” she thought. “But she had accepted my invitation first. I never dreamed Lulu would do such a thing. rowed there from the yacht and ar- ranged the details of the rescue with Philip. That was all.” “It was—everything!” Janet cried. ‘“Tell me what happened after Lucille and I were taken away?” “I stood off Norman till the saflors went into action and one shot from that gun brought them all to terms, but Norman escaped. He says he swam to another island where he had associates waliting, but I think he had a small rowbeat hidden somewhere that we did not discover; that, we shall never know now.” “Daddy told me that Norman killed a separate domicile for her and the children. Attorney Leonard A. Block appears for the wife. JOKER himself when he was captured here!" Janet's voice trembled. ‘I suppose it is just as well, but I cannot help feei- ing sorry for poor May Carlin, yet when I think of what they all did to Daddy and my old nurse Ruth here I feel almost murderous myself! To think that they were both actually prisoners under this roof at the very time I came home, and all the rest of the household spirited away! It was poor Ruth’'s cry I heard in the night before I ran away and they told me it was Mrs. Madison having an attack of nerves! Has she really lost her mind now?” “Try not to think of 1t Philip urged soothingly. “She will be well taken care of, and your old nurse is rapidly recovering. If you like we'll take her with us—home.” Dane returned, but presently he and the rest strolled away, leaving Janet and Philip together and the latter drew from his pocket a wisp of gossa- mer white with faint stains still show- ing upon it. “Do_you know what this is, dear- est? The little handkerchief you slip- ped under by helmet to staunch the wound from Nat's blow while I was unconscious! I kept it always, enemy of mine!” “Philip!"* Janet blushed and hung her head. “To think I was jealous of Lady Kingsmere when I saw you two come out of your house together! I thought you didn’t love me and my heart was broken! I had been through so much, I didn't know whom to trust! 8o many people who seemed nice proved to be really dreadful and 80 many good friends appeared sin- ister, treacherous! Even that pleasant old gentleman, Mr. Protheroe, living alone in the queer house built into the side of the hill—Mrs. Kerr told me he was a ‘manufacturer,’ but I never amed he was the maker of the in- férnal machines and bombs such as Nat used to wreck Norman's special when I was running away with Mr. Durant on his motor cycle! I dont belleve any girl in the world has lived through as much excitement as I have in the past month!” “Nor come through it with such un- falling courage and strength!” Philip bent adoringly over her. am very proud of you, dear, and proud that my name s to be borne by the daugh- ter of the Black Joker!” THE END.
