The Pattawatomie tribe, in whose territory he had settled, heard his teachings eagerly. Soon mos of them were converted De Smet hecame the beloved friend and ecclesiastical father of redskins whom other pioncers had given up 18 hopelessly hostile. He was regarded as sacred from attack and as the living spirit of truth. It would have been easy for de Smet to rest from his labors, but as soon as his Sugar Creek Mission was firmly established he sought out newer, rougher fields of duty.
