““FINANCI - INVESTMENT BOND LISTIS STRONGER Pre-Holiday Trading Slower. Lower Stocks Reflected in Some Issues. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 11.—Bonds that respond to the movements in stocks were lower today, while those that react to money rates and a strictly investment demand were higher. The market slowed down in anticipation of tomorrow's holiday, and also because of the new issues that are expected to be offered before the end of the week. These will possibly include the $30,000,000 6 per cent Prussian loan which has finally been agreed to in + Berli he Brazilian loan of $41,000,- 000, c#rrying a 615 per cent coupon and selling around a 7 per cent basis; a 4% per cent bond issue by the Philndelphia Electric Co., and a num- ber of smaller and less significant offerings. Polish Loan . Possibility. The Polish loan again is a possibil- ity, as the two parties to the nego- tiations have come closer together on terms. A $20,000,000 offering by the «Great Northern Railway, with a 4% per cant coupon, is imminent and there is a little later on the further financing by the Seaboard-All Florida Railroad to the extent of $5,529,000. Several large public utility issues have been held up awaiting the iron- ing out of legal complications. There are number of moderate sized in- s | loans also. Weakness in sugar stocks was re- flected in new low prices for the year in Cuba Cane Sugar 7s and a Joss of a point in the 8s, which were 6 points under the best of the year. The Supreme Court decision in the Teapot Dame case caused some early selling of Sinclair 6%s and 7s, with @« later rally. Dodge 6s were heavy again, as were J. Kayser 53s, Good- year Rubber 5s, with United States Bteel Sinking Fund 5s a point under the best recently made. Interboroughs were very strong. . ANl of the railroad 4% per cent issuyes that are still under par appear to be working up to that price. The movement in this direction today was quite ‘pronounced among such bonds ' of the Colorado Southern, Buffalo, ‘ggchester & Pittsburgh; Canadian cific, Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul and Rock lsland. At the same time other 4%3s selling at a premium held the advantage gained in the last month or so. Liberty 4%s Below Par. For the first time since the exchange offer to holders of United States " Liberty Second 4is terminated these ‘bonds of the issue sold below par . It bonds of the sisue sold below par. It is expected that $300,000,000 and $400,- 000,000 will be outstanding on Novem- ber 15. Among foreign issues the strongest + 'were Poland 8s, which advanced a point, New South Wales 5s which ‘were 3 points above the low price following the closing of the syndicate, Oslo 5%s above par compared with their issue price of 97 and or about a parity with City of Copenhagen 5%s, Chile 6s and Belgian issues. French governments were not affected by the concession of the United States Government permitting this foreign borrower to reduce the rate of in- i terest on its lean. Such condescension imay be international politics but it * Jooks to the av e _person to be a “Bit of bullying. ' GRAINS HAVE SETBAC . ONU. S. CROP REPORT Al“bfinfiel of Qorn at New Low _Prices for Season—Wheat “Tendency 1s to Seg. 1 By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, October 11.—Grain un- derwent an ollaround early drop in price today, tumbled .down by the United States. Government crop re- port. All delivéries of corn reached a new low price record for the season. ©Opening at half cent to 1% setback, ~heat afterward showed some addi- «onal losses. Corn started 11 to 2% off and then recovered to a moderate extent. Oats declined, but held better than corn or wheat. Provisions as well as cereals went down grade. Notwithstanding that the Canadian government crop report is construed @as bullish, wheat traders here de- ‘yoled themselves far more today to %m unexpected bearish aspect of the nited States crop figures. In this connection authoritative European ad- vices at hand sald the future ourse of wheat values abroad would depend ©on the value of North American of- fers and on growing conditions in the Southern Hemisphere. Today’s Australian crop news was less favor- able, but Argentine crop news au- spicious. : In corn, particular notice was taken . of Government comment that the Kan- #as estimated yield of corn, 171,000, 000 bushels, is the best crop the State Bas raised since 1915 and about three times as much as last year's Kansas « gorn harvest. Besides the indicated nas crop of kafir, Milo, maize and feterita, 39,913,000 bushels, is the larg- it on record. HE. Close. 1.30% e 1 FOREIGN EXCHANGE. (Quotations furnished by W. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 11.—Through- out the session on the Curb Exchange today trading was of a pre-holiday character. The usual evening up of accounts involved a fair-sized amount of short covering following yester- day’s shakeout along with liquidation of long holdings. The result was a confused movement of prices, with most gains and losses confined to com- paratively narrow limits. Johns-Manville, one of the prime favorites when speculation for the rise was at its height a month or so ago, continued to receive banking support and reached 120, as a against the previous final of 117%. Its strength, however, was offset by a drop of more than 4 points in Celaniz common, another that has figured prominently in the speculative opera- tions, Nothing definite so far has come to hand concerning the rumored consoli- dation of Borden Co. with Reid Ice Cream, but the action of the former stock indicated there was some spe- cific reason for the increased volume of the trading. Universal Leaf Tobacco and W. T. “ | Grant reached new highs for the year, but the improvement was confined to small fractions, Deere common fluc- tuated erratically, changing hands at 201 for a gain of 4 points, only to drop well below 200 later. Much of the re- cent demand is said to have been based on expectations that accumula- tions on the preferred issues were soon to be cleared up, thereby open- ing the way for distribution to com- mon share owners. Interest in the bond division cen- tered in Electric Refrigeration 6s fol- lowing yesterday's decline of 61 points. After receiving support at 6814, the price finally gave way, drop- Del & Hud 7s 30 Den & Rio G cn D Rio G West 5i Det United 43 Erie 1st cons Lyon 6s. Marseille Mexico 4s 04 asntd. COTTON HAS RALLY AFTER EARLY DROP Trade Buying or Covering on Decline Steadies Mark and Boosts Prices. - i By the Associated Press. ¥ NEW YORK, October 11.—The cot: ton market opened easy today at a decline of 14 to 18 points, active months showing net losses of about 20 to 24 points in early trading under a continuation of yesterday's selling movement. This included further liquidation of old accounts and con- siderable Southern selling, but trade buying and covering on the decline steadied the market and caused rallies of 15 or 18 points from the lowest by the end of the first hour. Early selling was promoted by favorable weather reports and rela- tively easy Liverpool cables, while the disposition to take profits on recent sales probably was increased by the proximity of a holiday and reports of a well maintained spot basis in the South. Private cables from Liverpool re- ported hedging and Bombay selling there and that stocks of cotton yarns were accumulating. The market became firmer after the early selling orders had been bsorbed. Local brokers reported an increased trade demand, while there was con- siderable covering in preparation for the holiday tomorrow and prices were firm, Decemver advancing to 20.72 and March to 21.00, or 14 to 17 points net higher. Offerings appeared to in- crease somewhat at this level, but the market was fairly steady within 5 or 6 points of the best at midday. The advance was accompanied by report that holders of spot cotton in the South were resisting declines, and that the basis was being firmly maintained.
