Washington's bid for selection as the scene of the Democratic national convention in 1928 will rest solely upon itS general invitation and the appeal of the attractions of the National Capital, and not upon the tender of a cash bonus to the Demo- convention Wi date upon which the Democratic na- tional committee will entertain sug- gestiohs regardinz the convention city, officials of the local trade bodies and the hotel association definitely and unanimously indicated today that no move would be initiated for the i sing of a fund of $150,000 or more, which has been held necessary for the selection of a city for the con- vention. Following the statement of Senator Carter Glass of Virginia that Wash- ington would be the most logical place for the convention, it is re- called, members of the local business and civic groups joined in urging that the convention be held here and invi- tations were extended to the Demo- cratic national committee by officials of several of the organization, the Chamber of Commerce sending a for- mal invitation. Fund Not Guaranteed. No guarantee -of a fund to help de- fray the convention expenses. how- ever, was mage in any of the Invita- tions, and ‘it ‘now appears that the local officials will stand on tneir gen- eral invitation and disregard the mat- | ter of the cash bonus. Laurence Mills of the Hotel Assocla- tion of Washington stated em Iy this morning that it would be “‘abso- lutely foolish” for Washintgon tu at- tempt to raise a fund as large as $150,000 or $200,000 to make the selec- tion of Washington more likely. In the first place, he seriously doubted it @ fund anywhere near as large as this could be obtained here for such a purpose. “And in the sccond place,” he con- tinued, “Washington never would be selected for the national convention of a political party. The selection of a convention city is, in my opinion, based partly at least upon political factors, which are not to be found in Washington.” Others Take Similar Stand. Mr. Mills indicated that his asso- ciation would not make any move to raise a guarantee for the convention committee. Similar positions were taken this morning by the presidents of the Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trade and the Mer- chants and Manufacturers' Associa- tion, who, while standing back of their general invitation to the Demo- cratic national committee to hold the convention here, doubted the ad- visability or possibility of attempting to raise a guarantee fund. Edwin C. Graham of the Board of Trade, M. A. Leese of the chamber and Maj. Gen. Anton Stephan of the Merchants and Manufacturers all doubted that such a fund could be raised. However, officials of some of the local trade groups haven't given up hope entirely for the bringing of the convention here, it was stated, and efforts will be continued to the last minute to convince members of the | Democratic committee that Washing- ton would be the logical selection.
