The picture pre- sents some of the most thrilling bat- tle scenes ever screened. Comedy it supplied by Wallace Beery and George Bancroft. The magnascope effect, which has been the subject of widespread com- ment, offers a genuine thrill and a surprise. It is used chiefly in the battle scenes, giving a wealth of de- tail to the encounters hetween the | Constitution and the pirate ships and | the fort at Tripoli. KEITH'S—Karyl Norman. Karyl Norman, known as “The Creole Fashion Plate,” will top the bill at B. F. Keith’s Theater next He will be assisted by Bob Mamill and Jerry Green. Al Trahan and Vesta E. Wallace also will be featured in a classic, “The Curtain Speech,” by Frank Fay. Others will include Chain and Archer, singing comedians, in “Oh, I Did Not”; Countess Sonia's “Revue Satricon,” with Alex Sherer, supported by a cast of Russian singers and dancers; Jack Redmond, called “The Golf Wizard,” in * Golf Lesson"; Mary Marlowe in a “Cycle of Song Impressions.” and other acts to be announced later. EARLE—Hasoutra in “High Art.” The headline attraction at the Earle Theater, beginning next Sunday after- noon, will be Hasoutra, called *“The Golden Idol of Paris,” presented by George Choos, in “High Art,” a novel cameo, featuring Walter and Eliza- beth Reddick and including Alice Ha ward and Gordon Bennett, with si Adelaide and Hughes girls. This dance fantasy is staged by J. J. Hughes, half of the popular dance team of Adelaide and Hughes, with music by Gene Lucas. ‘The bill will include Bob Murphy i “Combining Business with Pleasure” Hite and Reflow, with Warren Boyd, in a character skit entitled “Their Back Alley,” and The Texas Four, “Easin’ Along Ooozin' Melodies,” a male quartet hailing from the Lone Star State. The photoplay will be Paramount’s production of “Time to Love,” star- ring Raymond Griffith, the high-hat comedian, supported by Vera Veron- ina and an able cast. An “Our Gang” comedy, entitled “Seeing the World,” the Kinogram News and orchestral and pipe organ music will complete the program. GAYETY—“White Cargo.” White Cargo,” Leon Gordon's thrilling melodrama, will be next week’s attraction at the Gayety Theater. Lewis Talbot has made no change in the cast of last season, which in. cludes Christine Cooper as Tondeleyo, the half-cast girl; Robert Burns, as Wetzel; Joseph Forte, as Langford; Maurie Morris, the doctor, and Ed. ward Hudson, William Marble, Denn Mullen, John C. Louden, Tom G Jones and Punghi Bunda. he en- gagement opens with the usual Sun- day ma STRAND—"“Pom Pom.” Next week's attraction at the Strand Theater will be Rose Barnard in “Pom Pom,” with a com y of 25 and an ensemble of 16 dancing girls. Charles Wilson, the eccentric come- dian, heads the cast, with Rose Ber. nard, and othe include Naomi ‘Wheeler, Betty Abbott, Nan Forrest and Marion Palmer. The production is in 14 scenes, with 16 musical numbers, and in add [it Barbara Bedford as leading lady and Ricardo Cortez as the young officer whom she loves. Benjamin Christen- n directed. METROPOLITAN—"Smile, Brother, Smile. Brother, Smile,” a First mal release, directed by John ancis Dillon nd featuring Jack Mulhall and Dorothy Mackaill, will be the screen attraction at Crandall's Metropolitan Theater next week, be- S fternoon. Added at- ns will include a two-reel com- Mile {edy, the Metropolitan World Survey and music by the Metropolitan Sym- phony Orchestra, under Daniel Brees- kin. “Smile, Brother, Smile,” is said to offe; story as up to date as tomor- row morning’s paper, with the princi- pal character a young shipping clerk who has ambition to become a travel- ing salesman. His appointment to an imortant territory is secured, and for the first week on the road he turns in an amazing number of orders. Then the subtle work of a renegade les manager in cahoots with an op- ion firm takes its toll, and the oungster finds it impossible to land an order. The manner in which the pretty telephone operator in the home office comes to the aid of the boy friend and lands him the biggest order in the history of the company leads to the climax of this rollicking film play. The supporting cast includes T. Roy Barnes, Philo McCullough, E. J. Rat- cliffe, Ernest Hilllard, Jed Prouty and Yola @’Avril. RIALTO—"“Out All Night.” Reginald Denny in his latest pic- ture, “Out All Night,” will be the at- traction at the Rialto, starting Sat- urday. After the wedding the bride discovers there is a clause in her contract with the theatrical company which calls for the forfeiture of $100,000 if she marries. Therefore, the newlyweds are forced to keep their marriage a secret, and how they try to see each other on their trip to London is said to provide hilarious entertainment. COLUMBIA—“The Big Parade” (Third Week). “The Big Parade, marching on through its second week at Loew's Columbia Theater, is announced for a third and final week, commencing ir melody , the story centers about Jim Apperson, a typical fun-loving Ameri- can, much like other rich meu’s sons, and his two buddies—Bull, & former Bowery bartender, and Slim, an ex- riveter—and their life in the dough- boy billets in rural ‘France. Jim meets Melisande, played by Renee Adoree, who in her wooden sabots and milkmaid's_garb is a figure of high romance. In the supporting cast are Karl Dane, Tom O'Brien, Hobart Bos- worth, Claire Adams and others. The showing here features the orig- inal musical gcore. LITTLE THEATER—“Variety.” Next week the fulllength film of “Variety,” the UFA production, star- ring Emil Jannings with Lyda de Putti, by special arrangement with the Famous Players-Lasky Corpora- tion, will be presented by the Motion Picture Guild at the Little Theater. This is the Berlin and New York version of this melodrama of German vaudeville life, a tale of the eternal triangle. Jannings has the role of a trapeze artist, who deserts his wife for another and more beautiful per- former, only to have his new mistress stolen from him by a brother acrobat. The direction, photography and theme of this picture are said to be unusually fine. The “Variety” shown in Washington some time ago was not the real ‘“Variety,” the Motion Picture Guild announces. Thus a pro- duction almost entirely new to Wash- ington is promised. The out-of-the-ordinary Guild short subjects and the music of the Little Theater Trio will complete the pro- gram. The 3-yearold daughter of John Earnest Sale, manager of the Sani- tary Grocery Store at 311 Fifteenth street northeast, was largely re- sponsible for his release under a sus- pended sentence yesterday. Sale was being tried in Judge Mattingly's Police Court, charged with making threats against Jesse M. Cook, 1108 Eighth street southeast, whom he accused of assoclating with Mrs. Sale. The little girl followed her father to the witness stand and won the sym- pathy of the court by demanding that she be taken up into his arms while he was testifying. Cook said that he did not know Mrs. Sale was married when he met her. Mrs. Sale contended she left her husband because of drink, but Sale denied this and sa!d that she de- serted him and his little daughter the first of the year. The judge ordered the defendant to put up a $300 bond and then suspend- ed the sentence. DISHWASHER olored. Brass R B Abply 510 Oth st. i orti; PR 18¢ sipite. for Ford, dellvery.
