By day Mitchell was a hard work- ing man, a devoted husband “family man,” as he expressed it. By night he was the “cat” who preyed entirely upon women, holding them snatching then up at the point of a gun, their rings and handbags and fleeing into the night. More than 100 hold-ups are laid at his door, and as many burglaries. e talked freely to police and said he had no idea of the exact number of robberies he had committed. One of his burglaries was the home of Ed- ward Hines, millionaire lumberman. Women Seek View of Burglar. Close to 1,000 persons, mostly women, crowded the rickety old Sum- merdale Police Station until early to- | day to catch a glimpse of the college- bred bandit. Many women were there in an effort to identify him as the man who held them up. When the show-up was over, 40 charges of robbery with gun an burglary had been placed against him, and one statutory charge. During the most active period of his career several months ago, 400 police blanketed the Rogers Park dis- trict in which the “cat” had been ac- tive. Mitchell said that on the night this army of officers sought him he transferred his activities to another North Side neighborhood, committing three robberies. His wife, Mrs. Mitchell, has been held and police said she will be charged as an accessory. Mrs. Mitchell, who sald her father is a St. Louis, Mo., physician, did not participate in any of the hold-ups, according to her own and her husband’s story, but she said she learned what he was doing a few months ago. Bushels of Jewelry Found. Several bushels of jewelry found at the Mitchell home—aileged loot of his nocturnal forays—were piled on desks at the police station, where scores of women pawed over it, seeking to identify their own jewelry in the pile. Police estimated the total value of the articles at more than $25,000. Mitchell said he attended the Uni- versity of St. Louis before the war, re- turning to finish his civil engineering studies after serving as a volunteer with the American forces in France.
