There were intervais when the main body of stocks turned irregu- lar, with profittaking having its ef- fect in certain directions. It could not have been said, however, that any weakness was apparent. The upward movement predominated, and those back of the buying were as confident they had been two weeks ago of ined higher prices. High-grade public utilitles ma tained their place of prominence. he demand was attributed to the srowing recognition of the stability of earnings and belief that expanding operations will have their reflection in 1927 income. Empire Gas & Fuel 8 per cent preferred crossed 111, where it was at a new high, and Associated Gas & Electric above 4313 went into new high ground. Klectric Investors was actively bought at an ‘advance n- ing attention, class “A above with General at a new high for Baking the yea the belief that lower wh erially reduce production costs, which will naturally be reflected in earnings. Wesson Oil and Snowgrift gained more than 2 points o its hest prices following an upward revision of earnings estimates. Banking support served to main. tain selling prices for Johns-Manville, but little attempt was made to resume the upward movement. Expectations of a special distribution in the near future for share owners of Bancitaly formed the basis for another buying movement which carried the price up 2 points. The cotton market opened barely steady today at a decline of 4 to 13 points under rehewed realizing which fol- lowed yvesterday's hig advance on the Government crop figures, Selling was promoted by relativel easy Liverpool cables and a more f; vorable view of weather conditions in the South, but the declines brought in considerable buyving, in- fluenced by the bullish view of the crop estimate, and fluctuations were irregular, After selling off to 23.85 at the start, December rallied to 24.08 and was ruling around 9 at the end of the first hour, or within a point of yesterday's closing quotation. Prive id London and Continen had been ah sorbed Jocal and Manchester buys ing, with trade calling in Liverpool, but that yesterday's crop report had disturbed the Manchester market, and buyers of cotton goods were hold- ing off.
