D. C. TUESDAY. AUGUST 23, 197, FAMILY AIDING LEPER IN FREEDOM APPEAL Escaped Colony Inmt.e' Fights Return to Louisiana, Deny- ing Affliction. By the Associated Press ASHEVILLE. N. C, August 23.— New legal barriers were raised yester- day to block the Federal Government's plan to remove John Early, the leper, from the farm of his brother, Matt Early, in Polk County, and take him back to the Federal leprosarium in Loulsiana. Federal authorities here were ap- parently marking time pending a de- cision from Department of Justice officials as to what the next step shall be. Two Federal Public Health Serv- ice officers arrived in Asheville and were in conference with Brownlow ch,k.!om United States district mar- shal. Meanwhile an order was served on Marshal Jackson by a member of the sheriff’s department ordering that Barly be presented before Judge Walter Moore of Sylva, in Rutherford- ton, August 29. This order, signed by Judge R. A. Nunn at Black Mountain Saturday night, is an effort on the part of Early’s relatives to have him examined and to show he is not afflicted with leprosy. . The marshal, a deputy and the health officers, it was learned. had planned to go after Early yesterday. These plans were delaved, however, pending decision as to the proper legal procedure. “KINKAJOU” STEP WINS APPROVAL OF DANCERS Variation of Fox Trot Chosen as New Ballroom Feature for Year. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 23.—The “Kinkajou” is to be the new dance for 1927-28, 1,000 dancing masters in convention here have decided. An exhibition of the dance won them over to it and they voted down 17 other entries. Among them was the “Dixie stomp,” a rafter-shaking importation from Chicago that caught second place in the voting. Brack- eted with the *‘stomp” were the ““Yan- kee prance” and the “Lindbergh wave waltz.” Mrs. Edna Rothard Passapae of Newark, originator of the winning dance, described it as being simply “a strut step, little side steps, a twinkle step, heel point in half open position, a right pivot turn in strut position and a, left turn. In even simpler terms, Mrs. Passapae called it a form of fox trot. o Prince Becomes Good Flyer. By the Associated Press, GENEVA, 8witzerland, August 23.— The third international conference on transit and communications, convoked to facilitate international communica- tions, opened here today. Despite the shattering of windows in the famous glass room of the League of Nations Building, the con- ference held to its decision to meet there, the blinds being drawn as a substitute for windows and red cur- tains being drawn across the inside to hide the destruction caused by Sacco-Vanzettl rioters in their demon- stration last night. The Cuban delegate, Aguero y Betancourt, president of the confer- ence, in his opening address called attention to the importance of the presence of the American delegation, headed by Hugh R. Wilson, Ameri- can Minfter to Switzerland, He sald that it was the firet time that the Inited States had taken a share of the work of the transit organization under the auspices of the League of Nations. A number of the Latin American countries were represented, including olombia, Cuba, Venezuela and Sal- vador. The Turkish Republic was represented by an expert, as were Ecuador and Egypt. ST.
