He did an excellent job and won the confidence of Secretary Hughes and later of As Minister to China his advice was ®lso followed for the most part until ihe Nanking affair. Here Mr. Mac- Murray, together with the British and Japanese Ministers in Peking, drew up identic notes demanding apologies and indemnities of the Chinese author- ities for foreigners killed at Nanking and naming a date after which, if their Gemands were not complied with, the powers threatened mlitary inter- vention. The notes, before being pre- sented to the Chinese, were cabled to Washington, Tokio and London for approval. But so confident was Mr. MacMur- ray that his advice, hitherto followed without question by the State Depart- ment, again would be followed that he attempted to censor a press dispatch from Washington stating that Secre- ent gossip around State esignation | pateh was y's home- m\l( | tor, [to China | er the allegiance | ve | their_series of defeats at| . and | Quincy. e were seized | chow and| tary Kellogg would not support him. AUGUST STRENGTH OF WIND g | TESTED BY BUREAU Small Models of Skyscrapers Subjected to Various Velocities of Pressure. 21, How strong is the wind? Boreas in the past has had a some- | what unmerited reputation as a strong man, according to tests recently con- ducted in the wind tunnel of the Bu- reau of Standards and the pressure exerted against the walls of skyscrap- ers and factory buildings. The tests have been conducted with small models of these bulldings, built to scale, which have been placed on a platform in the tunnel and subjected to varlous velocities and pressures of wind. For a velocity of 100 miles an hour, as measured by Weather Bu- reau’ instruments, it was found that u pressure of approximately 22 pounds per square foot was exerted against the skyscraper model. These have been designed by reputable architects in the past to stand a pressure of at least 30 pounds per square foot. This TR \ ) O Windsor R >cker —In mahogany finish — deep ceat — well braced. In these experiments, conducted by Dr. Hugh L. Dryden and George C. Hill, no effort has been made to de termine the effect of hurricanes or other factors which have no place in straight wind measurements. tornado, it was explained, the build- ing is not demolished by the pressure | of wind against the outside. Actually it is blown out from the inside, due to the fact that in the center of the | storm there is an area where the pressure falls below that of the at- mosphere inside, A curlous fact developed from the experiment is that in a straight wind a low pressure area is created just above the roof. The atmospheric pressure inside the building exerts a push upward. This is held to ex- plain why roofs often are carried| away in_heavy winds while the rest of the building remains unharmed. | But they are thrown off rather than | pulled off. The experiments have provided a new formula for use by architects in estimating the stress and strain to which buildings constructed accord- ing to their plans will be subjected. ‘The wind tunnel, originally designed for aeronautical tests, value in several other fields of scien- tific experiment. o Those who squander time would, | Lady Ossulston Will Try to Give| cyclones, since these inolve so many | In a| is proving of |a v had it, HE WRIGHT FURNITURE_CO. i Adding Interest With Added Specials in the Wright Co.’s 7" AUGUST SALE of \ do the same with |it GILES GIVES UP FLIGHT.
