It's the first note of this size I have ever handled.” “In your safe?” Straine broke in again. ~ “Then why is it pere? No- CHAPTER III. The Empty Cabin. WO strides carried Christopher across his stateroom, and as he stood beside his open win- dow, the $1,000 banknote clutched tightly in his hand, a veritable turmoil raged within his breast. “It wasn't a fever delirlum! T did see those crystal slippers, those_ tiny ankles, this amazing $1,000 bill! Who, what and where!” And as his eyes studied the note he kept repeating: “Who, what and where! Who, what and where—" Finally adding: “Why?"” The moon was fast disappearing, and the cabin was almost dark when Christopher had one of those intul- tions which are never explained, the conviction that he was being watched by some one upon the deck. He pull- ed back his curtain and thrust his head out, searching the deck. There was no one in sight. ‘Well,” he told himself savagely, “this thing is getting my goat! The next time Kean needs some one to gather human interest he'll have to look a darned sight further than yours truly! Meantime I'll slip this con- founded note under my rug until morn- ing comes and the purser can hand it back to Lady Slipper! Who is the woman, anyway? What makes Straine #0 interested in her? Why didn't she pick him instead of me?” And then he concluded bitterly, “She saw that Straine was nuts over Anne, of course. . Anybody could see that. Too much competition, so she chose me, and she's no chicken, either! Forty if she's a day! A seasoned ad- venturess if there ever was one. Well, well, it's a great world for bachelors!” He was about to slip the yellow banknote beneath his rug when the door opened cautiously and a man’s head was stuck through the opening. It was Victor Straine. “Oh, Dahlgren! Just heard the doc- tor say that you had a touch of heat prostration. Anything I can do? The light from the passageway shone full upon Dahlgren, the yellow A full 10 minutes elapsed before Her ladyship was here but a short time ago in her night dress. Where, oh, where can her ladyship be?"” “Perhaps she's In one of the other women's cabins,” Chris was thinking quickly. *She knows Miss Morris!" The purser was already knocking on Anne's door and, receiving no re- sponse, did not wait, but turned the knob and entered. The room was in perfect order, everything neat and shipshape, but it also was empty. “Merciful saint: the distracted stewardess wrung her hands, “Miss Morris {8 not in the baths! There is no one there! Where, or, where can my ladies be! Where, oh where!’ “Search the decks and salons,” the purser directed, “It's impossible that Fritz returned with the purser. body has broken into your safe, I pre- sume?” “No. It was intact when I went to Chris said tensely. ‘“Who brought it in here?” The unpleasantness of his situation was beginning to dawn upon Christopher Dahlgren. What in the name of Sam Hill was happening upon this shi “Lady de Vere rang for me soon after dinner this evening and asked for her money,” the purser explained, and his tones expressed anxiety. “And you gave it to her?” “Yes, after a time and with the captain’s permission, when she had returned to us our receipt for her money."” “But why did she want {t?” Chris pursued his inquiry. “How could she use it?” “That was what worried the cap- tain,” the purser returned thought- fully.” He only let her have it after the greatest persuasion on her part.” bill clutched tightly in his hand, and Straine’s eyes instantly fastened upon it with a questioning stare. “Anything you want?” Straine re- peated his question, “I see you've got your money handy. Shall I buy you a drin] ‘Why! What a large bill to carry around—$1,000! My word, Dahl- gren, that’s the second one of those bables I've seen since I came aboard! I didn’t suppose there were so many out of captivity' “Neither did I1!” returned Chris, fu- rious at this unwelcome visitation, ‘and this fsn’t mine. Somebody plan ed it on me and I'm about to ring for the purser and get rid of the respon- sibility.” “‘Oh!"” the tone of Straine’s excla- mation added heaping coals to Chris’ fury. “Oh, how interesting! Perhaps you are right, under the circum- stances. Most unusual coincidence— most! Let me ring for you. You seem most unwell.” He pressed a button in the wall, and @ pause ensued, Chris throwing him- self again upon his berth, the bank- note held tightly, while Straine seated himselt_upon the cabin’s one small chair. Tt was several minutes before the Steward Fritz appeared, rubbing hiufiyes .i;:mllgyl: “Herr higren ri 8ick so; ‘more? Like some mel:‘lca, per}mp:n’!E I want the purser,” Chris sat erect in his berth; “tell him I'm sorry to disturb him at this hour of the night, but t's very important 4 “Ach, Herr Dahlgren, please!” Fritz was genuinely distressed. “It is 2 o'clock already! The ship is in bed! ‘The Herr Purser becomes most angry with me, and day come 80 soon now! Mein Herr, please wait! Only four, five hours, ‘please!” 7 “It's too bad, Fritz, T know,” Straine’s even tones intercepted the reply upon Chris’ lips, “but there is & reason for Mr. Dahlgren's needing the purser and I will take the respon- #ibility of your waking him. Tell him that Mr. Dahlgren has found a large sum of money concealed in his room. T},lt will bring_him soon enough! ‘But Herr Dahlgren very sick, much fevers!” Fritz still protested, “first he think he finds a_chair, now he gets himself money! Such fevers always make such dreams, Mein Herr!” His hands made an expressive gesture, how him the bill, Dahlgren,” Straine directed, and Chris, reviling himself for obeying, still found him- self yielding. Fritz studied the bill with widely dilating eyes. “Du lieber Gott!” he exclaimed, and then, recovering himself, went hurried- 1y from the room, muttering his astonishment. “You see?” Straine ohserved, “you don't want that thing in your hand: even for an hour. Looks too quee Chris did not repl He was asking himself why this man had intruded in this masterful way and at this hour. ‘Was it true that the doctor had re- ported his illness in the smoking room, causing this unwelcome atten- tion from an open enemy? Iilness! Chris hadn’t been ill at all! He had lied when he had complained to Straine of a he: he, lied to get rid of the fellow! What an Arabian Nights entertainment he was fur- nishing! A full 10 minutes elapsed before Fritz returned with the purser, who was a young American and a very disgusted one at that! “What's going on here? Couldn’t vou people wait 'till morning?” he asked abrupt This s supposed to be night in spite of the tropic moon!" This time Christopher got in ahead Straine, saying: Sorry, but I had to call you. I found this thousand-dollar banknote on the floor under my window. Never saw it before and don’t want to have anything to do with it.” He held out the yellow banknote and the purser took it, his face registering astonish- ment. “You found it where?” he asked in- credulously. “Just as I sald, on the floor under the window. I was lying there in that berth, awake, and all ‘at once I saw it fluttering about. Either it blew o gr somebody, dropped J; through of ¥ “But why?” Christopher persisted, tell me why?” “Well, she declared that she had had a dream that some one was breaking into the safe. The idea had taken complete possession of her, for she declared that her dreams always came true. She was so upset that she went into hysterics, and the cap- tain finally gave in. I think, Mr. Dahlgren, that you had better tell me the exact st of what led to your finding this bill. Was this other man in the cabin at the time?” Straine hastened to reply. “I heard in the smoking room that Dahl- gren had a touch of heat prostration and came in to offer my services. When I opened the door he was standing beside the window with the bill in his hand. I suggested that he wake you immediately.” “That was a very wise step,” the purser agreed, “and I will place this note in the safe again until morning. Lady de Vere must have dropped it in the passage some time during the evening and the breeze blew it into this cabin. I am sorry that you should have this embarrassment, Mr. Dahlgren, but glad that I can adjust the matter so easily.” “I was thinking,” Straine sald, “that it Lady de Vere is already so nervous about this money owing to her belief in dreams, it might be best to return it to her tonight. As I passed her door I noticed that the light was still burning. Why not let her have it before she becomes aware of its loss?” “That's a good idea,” the purser agreed. “I will relleve her mind about it immediately and insist upon placing all her money in the safe. She may be more reasonable now that she sees the danger of carrying such large sums upon her person.” He stepped into the passage, closely followed by both men. Chris was de- termined to see the bill returned. Straine—well, he appeared to be in- terested in everybody’s affairs! The light shone through Lady de Vere's transom and Chris noticed that Anne, across the way, was also burn- ing electricity. These women never go to bed!” he was thinking as the purser knocked on her ladyship’s door. “Crazy busi- ness sitting up all night, burning the candle at both ends; no sense to it.” No answer from Lady de Vere. An- r knock. Lady de Vere!" the purser called, “this is the purser. I have something of yours. Please open your door!” Complete stillness. ~The purser turned a troubled face toward Straine and Chris. “Funn; he said; “must be sound asleep With her light on.” “Try the door,” Chris suggested, ‘The man hesitated. “I'd better get the captain,” he sald, On a boat llke this—"" But Straine had already stepped forward and turned the knob. “I don’t mind trying,” he sald confi- “sie’ll understand!” ‘The door was not locked. to Straine’s hand and revealed an empty cabin which presented an ex- traordinary and appalling sight, gi ing indication of having been struc by a cyclone! Clothes, tollet articles, books, hand luggage were strewn about the floor, on berths and chalrs, producing a scene of utter devast: tion! “Good gracious!” broke from the lips of the purser, “what's happened here? Lady de Vere! He peered wildly about the stateroom, “Lady de Vere! bath Tt yielded asked hurriedly. these are all single passenger ike yours! She may be in the ladies’ lounge, however. We'll get the stewardess!” Fritz, the steward, again aroused by violent ringing, put in another sleepy appearance, but after one look at the devastated cabin_fled in search of the stewardess, while the purser with Straine and Chris stood looking upon the havoc in utter dismay. Several minutes elapsed before the substitute stewardess, Sonia, appeared, uttering loud exclamations of terror. _“Her ladysbip not in st bath! these ladles could have dlsappeared off the ship,” but Chris was already out of earshot, tearing along the inner passage in search of Anne, his Anne! GRAND CANYON, Ariz, August 19.—The placing of 12 young ante- lope fawns on the Tonto Plateau in the Grand Canyon Natlonal Park marked the beginning of an interest- ing experiment by the Government in restocking this area. Many years ago the antelope, or pronghorn, as it is sometimes called, roamed the Western plains in almost countless thousands. Included in its range was the Grand Canyon region. But by the time the park was cre- ated, in 1919, not one of these animals was found within its borders. The National Park Service, believ- ing that the Grand Canyon provided a good range for antelope, secured six young bucks and six does from the game preserve at Reno, Nev., as the nucleus for a future herd. They had been caught when they were fawns only a day old and raised on a bottle. When brought to the Canyon, they ‘were about 5 months oild. The ani- mals were placed in crates and car- ried on pack mules 8 miles down the trail to the Tonto Plateau. Eleven arrived safely. One little buck, which broke his leg on the way down, had to be shot. While it is too early yet to know whether or not the experiment will he a success, the outlook seems promis- ing. Last Spring five fawns were born, proving that the antelope were able to breed under new conditions. Two of the fawns died, but the three that remain_are ddes. Four of the original herd have also died, leaving 10 animals at the present time. An interesting feature of the herd is that, while the original antelopes are as tame as any domestic animals, the little fawns, in ‘spite of the tame- ness of their elders, are quite wild and cannot be approached closely. AUTO DEATH TOLL RISES, DESPITE SAFETY DRIVES Insurance Company Finds One- Fourth of Death Claims Dus to Machines, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 19.—The death toll of the automobile keeps on climb- ng. The most recent figures show that no methods now in general use have served even to check, to say nothing of reduce, the loss of life from auto- mobile accidents. Statisticians of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. re- port that one-fourth of the violent deaths among its policyholders in the first half of this year came from acei- dents in motor vehicle traffic. Of these 38 per cent were children. Statisticians point out that this is a fertile fleld for child welfare asso- clations, where they might help curb the danger by pushing the establish- ment of playgrounds and teaching the dangers of street play. A class in safety education in every school, it is felt, would do much to bring down the total number of deaths. They also suggest that another means to the same end would be the general study, with a view to general application, of the methods which have been dem: onstrated successes in certain commu- nitles. Albany, N. Y.; Grand Rapids, Mich., and Providence, R. 1., are cited as clties whose successful safety meas- ures could be profitably studied by offi- cials concerned with traffic regulation.
