In Detroit the h the largest indiv ing company ms ns a remarkable display of outdoor scenes in its main windows. In Summer these are camping and touring scenes and in Winter a hunting scene or some other novelty, but h has the car s0ld by the company prominently dis- played. In another city one of the retailers of a car in the medium paid fleld conducts a radio concert each evening. One large manufacturer has been running a series of non-stop motor guessing contes! awarding prizes to prospective customers who make the closest guesses as to the mileage turned out by the car on display. These cars usually are mounted on an endless belt or with the rear wheels mounted on two large wooden pulley i also are awarded for the g sest to the amount of gasolin onsumed and to oil con- sumption. Innovation Finds Favor. Another innovation which is finding favor among the dealers is to ask the prospective customer to drive the c: himself without having a salesman along. Some deale: object to this, but with the higher-priced rs it works well. these expen ve well and they like to get the “feel” of the car and engine without being told all| about its sterling qualities and how to operate it. They prefer to find| those qualities for themselves. The salesmen, of course, are on hand to| get the signature on the dotted line, but the old-time demonstration is pass- | ing out of the picture. There is also a decided increase in the number of buyers who take de- livery at the factory. These custom- ers buy through the dealer, but by going to the factory they have some chance to pick their own cars and get them without delay as they come off the assembling line. It saves the buyer freight and he has the fun of | driving his car home and telling his friends about the stunt. Dealers in some of the farm- g districts take in produce, horses, ttle or farm chattels which have any kind of market, or which can be car- ried along and disposed of at favorable opportunities. The dealers say people are too busy to sell their own personal property, so they are perfectly willing to let the dealer, if he has the capital, do that work. This trend is meeting opposition from economists, who see danger in it. Others argue, however, that the American is a trader from childhood and that this is not likely to sap his moral staming or lead to distress any more than swapping knives or tops.
