Wu desires to settle the Nanking t with the foreign powers, as |’ but Chiang is as anti-Japanese and ‘anti-British as he is antl-every- thing else. Ho is driving up the railway to Peking in the hope of reaching there before his enemies, the radicals of ionalist movement, occupy the In the meantime all the re- \ctionary forces in China, from the British to Marshal Chang Tso-Lin, e offered their friendship to Chiang hek and the Nanking govern: Tt is difficult to see how he can re- fuse these alliances, and the pressure N s own ‘“government” is in that airectign, Must Decide Soon. Iis position is anomalous and his wovernment is shaky, but before ‘the ssummer is up he will have to decide way or in the other, either natural counter-revolutionary or for that Hankow revolu- government he so flamboy- tly denounced last April. Meanwhile he has disarmed the labor and peasant unions throughout the territories he controls, and the to- tal deaths from these conflicts in Shanghal, Nanking and down the coast to Canton are said to have been well above a thousand. This fact would make it almost impossible for the Hankow government ever to ac- cept him back into the fold, for to do =0 would be to insult the labor unions which form Hankow’s support. Chiang logically, therefore, will be forced to join the other counter-revo- tutionary forces in China, or be elim- inated completely. One station will be situated in the Kunlun Mountains 3,000 meters above sea level. Have Spledid Camps. Our camps are indeed splendid. We have 23 tents, 66 men and 292 camels. Under our agreement, all collections except those of an archeological char- ter will go to Sweden. I have good reason to believe that Sweden also will receive duplicates in the archeo- logical collections. The work is being done with per- fect harmony. The Chinese have given us entire liberty and we are proceeding without the least restric- tion. Any reports of opposition are entirely fictitious. I now enjoy great- er liberty and security than during any former journey. My co-director, Prof. Siu Ping Chang, is a noble, broad-minded, charming man. The other Chinese show us the greatest sympathy and our opinions regarding the routes and work to be done coin- cide in every detail. The relations between the Chinese and Europeans are most excellent, the Chinese mem- bers of the expedition being full of enthusiasm and their help invaluable. I have asked that two new Chinese students join us at Urumtschi. Chinese Plan Expeditions. They are already dreaming of suc- cessive expeditions to follow our jour- ney, and intimate that through the co-operation of Swedish scientific cir- cles the new China will {ake up the work. Our position is very strong, and if future expeditions should be granted the same conditions the Swedish ex- ploration of central Asia will pro- ceed with much greater speed than hitherto. Our Chinese friends and our- selves entertain the brightest hopes for the future. Discipline is exemplary. It is easy to lead an enterprise when every man does his duty with enthusiasm. I am advancing with my comrades as if to a feast which marks the climax of my life. All members of the cara- van, men and animals, the latter in- cluding tame antelopes, eagles, kan- garoos and rats, are in the best of health. Now we are cutting off all connec- tion with the outer world for six months. The Swedish flag floats above our city of tents and at the head of our caravan.
