Morgan's aides on the committee for restoring devastated France has succumbed to Cupid, as the direct result of associa- tion with: gallant sympathizers in the same cause. This is Miss Eleanore eet Carpenter, who has been ss Morgan since 1917 and who narried M. Jacques Dunant, an architect associated with the Mor- gan restorations. The other was the former Elsie de Wolfe, now Lady Mendl. Mme. Dunant is the daughter of Mrs. J. Crouse Carpenter, who has lived abroad for many years with her brother, Samuel Emlen Carpenter, a well known artist. The marriage of her daughter was quietly solemnized at Antibes the last week of July and was attended by only personal friends, among them Miss Morgan and Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, jr. M. and Mme. Dunant will continue their work about Antibes without interrup- tion but plan a honeymoon trip later which will include & visit to New o¥rk ofid Phifadelphia.’ It Was id*1917 that | the then Miss Carpenter met her hus- hand, when both were driving am- bulances on the Chemin des' Dames, Dunant baing a Swiss subject but | . a volunteer in the French Hospital Service. This boat, which moored for several Summers in the Connecti- cnt River not far from the Gillette family domicile outside of Hartford, afforded its owner an opportunity to know many aquatic characters and to hear the folk lore of the Nutmeg State. He has embodied much of this in a mystery story, “The Astoundlng Crime of Torrington Road,” a depar- ture in such fiction and on the devel- opment of which he has spent more thdn two years. Mr. Gillette has in contemplation a series of papers deal- ing with his early years, when he was the near neighbor of Mark Twain in Hartford and when the humorist in- spired his ambision to go on the stage, adviceé which he heeded. On the strength of the strong indorsement received from Mr. Clemens, young Gillette secured an engagement in the Globe Theater in Boston. All theater- goers of the older generation remem- ber Mr. Gillette in the leading role of *The Gilded Age,” Mark Twain’s dramatized story, and in which he achieved his first success. This was after a dreary term in Boston and many months with a stock company in New Orleans. Inheriting a fortune, to which he made substantial addi- tions, Mr. Glllette, although clinging to his house boat, has a fine estate along the Connecticut near Haldyme, and here he has placed a large park fre t the disposal of the public for nd supper parties and outdoor Mr. Thomas William Lamont and his daughter.
