MILLER, BURROWS, BURTON ENTER MUNY MATCH PLAY Cole, Washington Champion, as Well as Bolstead, Na- tional Titleholder, Fails to Attain Place Among 32 Survivors, LEVELAND, Ohlo, August 4.— Succeeding in the qualifying vound where Lester Boestead, the defending champion, failed with Charles W. Cole, Wash- cton municipal links titleholder, John e . 1. Burrows and Robert Burton of the Capital were playing to- ax in the first round of the national iblic ligks championship. b soie \thu was expected to be the star of the Washington quartet, was The only one of the fourman team from the Capital unable to xolve the Qifficulties of the Ridgewood course here and qualify for the champion- ship flight. y Two of the ashington plavers. Burton and Miller, are in the lower balf of the pajrings today, with Bur- rows in the upper bracket. Miller led The Washington contingent in the medal round with a 36-hole card of adding a fine 76 vesterday to his the day before. Burrows followed of the first qualifying day_ with Vesterday for a total of 156 and rton added a 78 to his 82 of the day previous for a 160 total i Burrows was paired today with H. | R. Wilson, youthful Kansas City star, who developed his game on a course 1aid out on a vacant lot near his home. Miller met George Thomas of Chicago and Burton was paired with Robert Wingate of Jacksonville, Fla. Washington's team, with a combined 86-hole total of 642 strokes, finished second in the competition for the inter- city trophy, three shots back of the Pittsburgh_team, which had 639, Had Cole played up to his usual fine game Washington would have won. By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, August 4.—There vill be a new_ public links champlon this vear, for Lester Bolstead of Min- neapolis failed to qualify for match play in the tourney at Ridgewood and was missing from the fray today when the 32 survivors of medal play paired off for the first match round to minate 16 other players. And this bevy of 16 will halve itself in a second 18-hole round to conclude the task set for the third day of the meet. With the eclipse of Bolstad, who never got going during the two medal rounds, taking two there appeared on the horizon a new star in Clarke Morse of St. Louis, and al- though only 17 years old and boyish! slizht in build, he scintillated more than any other star of the meet. He will take back to the sylvan Hnks of Forest Park, which has pro- duced so many good golfers, the 1927 gold medal, signifying that his 73—76 —149 was better than any of the other 121 players could do. It proved to be only one stroke ahead of the 150 recorded by Carl Kauffman of Pitts- burgh, and just two blows better than the 131 attained by Carmen Bill of Cleveland and Robert Wingate of Jacksonville, Fla., but it was the best. And it was made by even golf that kept him in the van all the way after the first nine holes. The twin cities of Minnesota lost their champion, but through Frank Brokle of St. Paul retained some of the glory, for that lad scored the only par 72 during the qualification rounds, setting a new record for the hilly, 6.650-yvard course from the back tees and finishing in fifth place. He had a 7 in that 72, but bagged five birdies and shot 9 pars. The record had been 73, made by Morse, Bill and Kauffman in the first round. The survivors of medal play were about evenly divided between East and West, with one from the South and one from Canada. " EVENING' Birdie by Bobby Is a Dream Shot BY SOL METZGER. ‘When Bobby Cruickshank came to the eighteenth tee at Inwood on his last round of the open cham- plonship of the United States of America in 1923 he knew he needed a birdle 3 on that long par 4 hole in order to tie Bobby Jones and force a play-off. The diminutive Scot, at his best under pressure, drove straight down the middle, 175 yards from home. The green was backed by a hard road, flanked by traps and guarded in front by a lagoon. Furthermore, there was a puzzling wind blowing across the course from left to right. Bobby chose his No. 1 Stewart iron, care- NO.T_IRON (CONTACT #2> The Westernmost qualifier was Kendall Morrison of St. Joseph, Md., who was tied for ninth at 156. Nerve Saves Merola. The last man to qualify owed his survival to grit, for Joe Merola of New York, who has inducted so many lads of the Latin race into Scotch golfdom, saved himself at least twice on sheer nerve. On the ninth hole vesterday. his second shot came to rest three inches from a tree, which was on the side where the youth had to take his stance. Nothing daunted, Merola embraced the trunk of a sap- iing, and, thus handicapped, slapped the ball to the green and into the hole for a birdie 3. Then, when this act had enabled him to tie with four others for last place at 162, his good drive, 70 yards short of the first green, seemed use- less to onlookers because Guy McCall of Buffalo had spanked his ball to the carpet, 319 vards. It didn’t seem hopeless to Merola, for he pitched dead and halved the hole and then won the second extra with a birdie 4. “No wonder the Romans conquered the world,” said a man in the gallery. The President Harding cup for in- tercity team contest went from Chi- go, which has held it twice, to Pitts- burgh, whose team of four won with a total of 639. Washington was sec- ond with 642, while New York was third with 643. The best Chicago could do in de fense was 653, which tled with Kansas City. STRAIGHT OFF THE TEE ROFESSIONAL golfers of Wash- ington and Baltimore are to do some traveling to play in their regular semi-weekly event next Monday. They will compete in an 18-hole tourney at the Fountain Head Country Club of Hagerstown, where the Maryland open golf cham- pionship will be held a few weeks hence. The Hagerstown club is one of the most progressive golf organizations in upper Maryland, and-zecently held an invitation tournament, which was won by B. Warren Corkran. Golfing members of the Washington Kiwanis Club defeated Baltimore Kiwanians in a team match yesterday at the Indlan Spring Golf Club, win- ning 10 points to 9. Low gross prize in the tourney went to Willlam G. Oliver, Baltimore, with 87, who won the draw after a tie with Charles H. Pardoe of Washington. Five players, Frank Mitchell of ‘Washington and J. G. McAllister, H. G. Evitt, H. M. Davis and Dan Neill of Baltimore, tied in the kickers’ han- dicap and all were given prizes. The number selected was 73. A box of flowers was given to Wil- llam H. Bagby of Baltimore for turn- ing in the highest score of 117. A din- ner followed the tourney at the Indian Spring clubhouse. With a decision of some sort ex- pected in the Voigt case today or to- morrow, the United States Golf Asso- clation yesterday assured E. C. Alvord, counsel for Voigt, that if a decision was reached to prefer formal charges mgainst the player every opportunity would be given his counsel to answer the charges and to appear in his de- fense. | Aroused by published reports that a decison had been reached unfa- vorable to Voigt, Alvord yesterday telegraphed the United States Golf Assoclation inquiring as to whether & formal hearing would be held, as promised in Washington a week ago. Herbert H. Ramsay, secretary of the association, wired Alvord that news. paper reports as to a decision hav- ing been reached should be disre- garded. It the decision is unfavorable to Voigt it will result in formal charges being prepared and made against the player, with a formal hearing to follow within a few days. At this hearing counsel for Volgt will com- bat the charges, and both-accused and accusers may umake statements. If a decision is reached to allow the Bannockburn star to compete in the national amateur championship, there will be no need for a formal hearing and the matter will be dropped. fully studied the conditions, allowed about 8 feet for the wind to drift his ball, and then caught it clean with his iron, lifting it high. It fell some 30 feet from the pin and rolled to within 7 feet of the cup. Bobby sank that putt. I never saw a flner shot made under pressure. Cruickshank never wanted to hit a ball more than he did that one. And when that is the situation the tendency is to get the body in too soon. Yet he kept back of the ball with his body when he hit and let his arms and hands do the work. The golfer who tries too hard in- variably gets his body in too soon. Relaxation prevents that fault cropping up in play. All players who are regarded as having any chance whatever are being closely watched, with a view to determining an approximate idea of their prospects of winning the title now held by George von Elm. There 18, of course, a lot of specula- tion about von Elm. But little can be known about his game, since he has been playing individually in the Far ‘West and has turned in no important tourney play by which his present form may be compared to that of 1926. ‘What is known about him is that he will be in there fighting at Minikhada. Youngsters to Compete. The coming tournament will see a raft of youngsters in competition, in- cluding an unusual number of up-and- coming players of the Far West and Middle West. This matter of a champlon repeat- ing in the amateur is not so simple as it used to be. The competition is much sterner all along the line. Before Bobby Jones turned the trick in 1924 and 1925, there had been no case of repeating for 11 years. In 1914, Jerome Travers at Garden City, retained the title which he had won the previous year at the Chicago Golf Club. No amateur, indeed, has Travers’ record of twice repeating, his previous accomplishments in this respect hav- ing occurred in 1908 at Garden Clty after he had won the champlonship in 1907 at the Euclid Club in Cleve- land. Walter Travis won in 1900 and again swept through to victory in 1901, Al of which shows that win- ning the title twice successively was not such an unusual achievement in years gone by Championships of today have, among other alluring qualities the element of a vast uncertainty. No one can ever say that some fledgling will not flash out of national obscurity and impress the wiseacres with the tutllity of prophesy. Few Remain at Top. With the exception of Bobby Jones and Jess Sweetser, men who were considered four and flve years ago as strong possibilities for the title are no longer so considered—unless the perennial Francis Ouimet be included. Last year, for example, Bobby Jones was the runner-up to Von Elm, while Dawson and Ouimet were in the semi- finals, In 1925 Watts Gunn was run- ner-up to Jones,’and Von Elm and R, A. Jones were in the semi-finals. Three years ago Von Elm was run- ner-up to Bobby Jones and Ouimet and Max Marston were in the semi-finals. The names change in 1923, when Sweetser was runner-up to Max Mar- ston, and Bob Gardner and Ouimet wero in the semi-final round. In 1922 Chick Evans was runner-up to Sweetser, Bobby Jones and Knep- per being seml-finalists. Bob Gardner was runner-up to Jess Guilford in 1921, with Evans and Hunter playing in the semi-finals. Ouimet was run- ner-up to Evans in 1920 and Allis and Bobby Jones were seml-finalists. So it goes. It isn't so much that the former outstanding players have slumped in a few years as that young- sters have come up with a better brand of golf and a keeener competi- tive spirit. o CALLOW WILL HANDLE PENNSYLVANIA CREWS GIRL. for general with ‘small family North 981 opportunity to Call after 11 Bank 7 p.m. lishment has ‘heen operated for 3 years. the past_vear showing a gross profit of ‘over $12.000.
