Charles Woodard's passion for doughnuts, which he helped himself to from the doorstep of a delicatessen store opposite police headquarters yesterday and in full view of Detec- tives Ira Keck and B. W. Thompson, led to his arrest and the charge of robbery being preferred against him— not for taking the doughnuts, but for participating in the holdup of Max Aein, grocer, at 201 C street southwest, on the night of Febru- ary 4. Woodard, a colored youth, who gave his age as 18 and his home at Green- ville, ‘was identified last night, the de es stated, as one of the three robbers by Aein. The grocer declared one of the bandits wore a red sweater after he had otherwise identified him, and when Woodard's coat was unbuttoned, it revealed a red sweater. The charge of robbery then was preferred. WOMAN WINS $25,000 AFTER LEG OPERATION Attempt to Straighten Limbs Fol- lowed by Amputation, Patient Charges. By the Assoclated Press. 1.0S ANGELES, March 2~—Miss Helen R. Goldman, who underwent an operation to have her bow legs straightened when short skirts came in style, was awarded $25,000 dam- ages by a jury yesterday in a suit against the surgeons, in which she charged negligence. The operation resulted in blood pol- soning and subsequent amputation of one leg below the knee. Miss_Goldman sued the surgeons, John Dunlop and T. M. Hart, for $100,000 damages. The defendants de- nied the charges, declaring the opera- tion and treatment were according to the best medical practice, and that the operation was performed only because Miss Goldman was so sensitive about her bow legs that she threatened sul- cide.
