TOKIO, February 28.—The house- |hold department today announced that Prince Chichibu, heir apparent, would not return to England to com- {plete his education, as was hitherto anticipated. It was thought best that he remain in Japan, at least until the accouche- ment of Empress Nagako, which s expected in September. Emperor Hirohito as yet has no male heir, and until one is born Chichibu will remain in line for the crown. If a male heir is born Prince Chi- chibu’s responsibility will be some- what lessened, and in that event it is considered possible that the Em- peror will grant permission to com- plete his education abroad. And some of them were young and fair, and some were old and fat, and some still wore hat. The water it was cold and damp, as from an Arctic shore, and many soon succumbed to cramp, and quit, and hoped no more. ~The wind was colder than the se: it pierced men through and through;some swimmers then began to sneeze, with symptoms of the flu. And so by two’s and four's they dropped from out that thrilling race; but there was one who never stopped, who thought defeat disgrace. In far Toronto, in a shack, his hope- ful mother sits; she's sure that George will soon come back, the money in his mits. She staked her son with all she had, she gave him all her stock; she took for him the bottom scad from out the eight-day clock. And now, ‘while others quit the race, worn out in wind and brawn, too cold and tired to keep the pace, this youth swims on and on. The seaweed winds about his limbs and threatens to destroy; he kicks it loose and on he swims, oh, lion-hearted boy! His good old mother’s done her part, she dreams not that he'll lose; and it would surely break her heart to get distressing news. He seems to see her watch and wait before the telephone; and so he hits a stronger gait, spurs on each aching bone. He seems to see her happy smile at news that he has won; and so he swims another mile, though almost spent and done. He wins, he garners wealth and fame, he's reached his shining goal, and happy is that Spartan dame who backed him with her roll. ‘WALT MASON. (Covyright. 1927. House .of Repre- sentatives. BALTIMORE, February 2 IBaltlmfirn & Ohio Rail | —The tonight w commemorate its actual founding ' will 100 years ago, in a pageant at the Lyric Theater here. In three eplsodes, the pageant is called “The Birth of a Railroad.” First is depicted the meeting, in Feb- ruary, 1927, of a group of Baltimoreans at the home of George Brown, Balti- more banker. At that meeting the original idea of a railroad to the West from Baltimore was thrashed out. The other episodes show the laying of the first stone of the road and the inauguration of service. Bishop John Gardiner Murray will deliver the invocation, and addresses be made by Albert Ritchie, Mayor Howard W. Jackson and Newton D. Baker, former Secre- tary of War, and a director of the road. Among the railroad executives who will attend is Col. J. M. Schoonmaker, chairman _of the board of the Pitts- burgh & Lake Erie Railroad. In ac- cepting the invitation to be present, Col.
