LAW-BANNED PLAY TAKEN FROM STAGE "Xhe Captive,” One of Three i, Raided in New York, i3 Withdrawn. > Bpnadssoctated Press. e ‘W YORK, February 16.—Shortly time for the legal curtain to !;mn a “‘courtroom matinee” of “The ,"* one of three plays raided in last week's stage clean-up campaign, producers of the production announced that they decided it would be “‘unwise #nd unpolitic” to continue the run of the play. Th‘? casts of “Sex’ and “The Virgin Man” are already held under bail for hearing in special sessions, and yes- terday Magistrate Renaud ruled that the 12 members of “The Captive” cast fmust appear for arralgnment today, despite the fact that this would ne. cessitate cancellation of a $2,500 matinee performance. Manager’s Statement. ‘Three hours before time for the | oourt hearing Gilbert Miller, manag. | ing director for the Charles Frohman Co., producers of “The Captive,” is- sued & statement announcing cessa- tion of production. He based the decision on ‘“strong criticlsm in some quarters,” but reit erated his bellef that the play was a | fine production, worthy of the best traditions of the stage, and asserted that the authorities had been ‘zross- 1y unfair.” L, Miller said that at todav'a court “matinee” Magistrate Renaud would be requested to drop the complaint against members of “The Captive” cast in return for voluntary with- drawal of the play after tonight's per- formance. | “Sex” and “The Virgin Man' are continuing production while the courts consider their cases. AMUS SCHUBERT-BELASCO—"Plckwick.” Many names appear in connection | with this presentation of *Pickwick. i1t would on first consideration wseem impossible for so large a num- ber of people to contribute resp nsibly 1o the dramatization; vet th« result is a brilliant example of Zocused energles. The actor often overwimims the author and the author cften over- whelms his original source 3f inspira- tion in processes of adsptation or translation. In the present case there is but one dominant name, *Plckwick.” Dickens himeelf is subordinate. As in the case of Frankenstein, the fabrication has’risen above its creator. But this Pickwick is no monster. Previous Pickwicks have been- not types of humanity, but exaggerated semblances. By contradicting the ordinary rules of actor reasoning, John Cumberland scores a triumph. No man could be more self-effacing and sincere. No man could be more reluctant to sport a scene of -sentimental delicacy for the sake of a transcient laugh. Surrounded by a galaxy of char- acterization, Pickwick, with an un- wavering glow, remains the Alpha of the constellation. The feat is wonderful because it is accomplished by methods far apart from the self-exploitation which has become so common that even the most casual observer must understand its ‘mechanism. “Research” is a dull word. Frank Reilly has redeemed it. He has been first a Dickens enthusiast. He now arrives as a Pickwick fanatic. Years of devotion to the adventures of the gen. tle companion who in default of mor distinguished association strives . to conduet his loyal friends into the do-| main of pseudo-sclence have enabled | him to restore Dickens to his rightful position as not only a novelist, but a | dramatist. The character of Pickwick is be-| loved. To every reader of books he is! a cherished friend. Apparently he ha: lacked, heretofore, what the motion pictures refer to as “continuity.” In the book he has flourished incidentally with hearty effulgence, only to be eclipsed time and agaln with one of the droll characters which sprang so easily from the Dickens imagination. Mr. Reilly freely accepts respons bility for the drudgeful task of as sembling the remarks and the adven- | tures of Mr. Pickwick into material for a consistent character study. It has, apparently. been the duty of Cosmo Hamilton to arrange this material. arrayed with scholarly de votion, into a form providing sus- | pense, climax, and even thrill. " may be regarded as renewed assurance in the case of Mr. Hamilton, to the effect that, “he knows his drama.” A difficulty arises in discussing the personnel bf the “Pickwick" Company. As the scenes pass, one plaver seems to have scored a commanding hit, only to give way to another player whose hit is no less commanding For awhile it seemed as if the in- sidious and ingratiating Mr. Jingle had claimed supreme interest. Then come the Welliver family, with their significant and immortal utterances on the subject of ‘“vidder The Pick- wick Club’s membership asserts a hint of delicious satire on the desire of simple intelligence for solemn distinc tion; and behind all the play of mo tives, more or less obscure, is the lamblike but indomitable heroism of Pickwick himself. ; The production is so elaborate anil beautiful as to create apprehension. However splendid and meritorious a work may be, its future must remain in constant jeopardy if the enthusiasm of the artist has carried him too far under the cold, calculating supervision of the auditor. A Dickens' reading public should easily recognize a labor of love on the part of Mr. Rellly and Mr. Hamilton, as well as on the part of John Cumberland and as loyal a crew of players as ever manned a theatric ship (every one of them is| entitled to a medal), and carry into many long seasons hence the memory | of a production worthy of mention in | the most highly respected annals of | the stage.
