LONDON, February 12.—Prohibi- tionists are stimulated and point with great pride to latest figures of the London County Council showing that the city today is drier by 1,882 fewer licenses than in 1905. The returns account for 4,135 public houses and | 1.213 beer houses which are still doing | business, this representing one bar for every 38 of the population. Among the picturesque names which have disappeared from the list through thé extinction of licenses are the Shakespeare. the Maid and Mag- pie, the Jolly Sailor and the Old Green Gate, Cock and Lion, the Horn of Plenty, the Sash and Cocoa Tree, the Flying Scud and the Crown and Cushion. In addition to the licensed public houses there are 402 hotels and restaurants serving liquor, and 2,137 wholesale liquor houses. DUKE OF ANHALT TO WED. WRC. The “Busy Bee hour” will be a new Baltimore feature at WRC, starting Tuesday night. The hour will be made up of music and travel talk, and will employ Baltimore vocal and instrumental soloists and groups, using different talent each week. The idea of the sponsors of the program is to provide the radio audi- ence with a new form of travel feature, interspersing and relieving the lecture with musical backgrounds and vocal and instrumental offerings of the classics of the various countries visited, which, according to the_ di- rectors, will take a bee-line from jgne interesting place to another, i By Consolidated Press. ATLANTA. Ga., February 12.—Dr. Palmer M. Craig, 27-vear-oid instruc- tor in physics at Mercer University. Macon, Ga., has severed his connection with that institution, effective at the end of the Spring term, announcing that he will set up laboratories in New York in partnership with George Hammond, president of the Premier Radio Corporation, and his brother, John Hays Hammond, for the com. mercial manufacture of a new radio device, displacing batteries and tubes on receiving sets. The Hammond brothers have paid him “in_excess of $175.000" for an interest in the patent. Dr. Craig de- clined to give out the exact terms of the contract, but stated that four other radio manufacturers had made offers for his device and that he had re- fused $175,000 and 5 per cent royalty from one. The deal was closed at Palm Beach, Fla., with the Hammonds personally, who invested only their private funds in the enterprise. Dr. Craig's authorized description of the device is “the application of bis- muth plates to the radio as detectors and amplifiers.” The actual device is <eries of thin mica vlates covered with bismuth solution. These plates are piled upon each other and between _them run small wires. The apparatus is placed in a_wooden hox, around which is a coil. The current. entering the bismuth-covered plates by means of the coil, creates therein an electro- magnetic fleld. The current permeates through the bismuth field, bringing about electro-chemical conditions that make the apparatus serve as amplifier and detector. It can .be applied to any radio set now in use, according to the inventor, and fts high sensitive- ness makes clearer and purer sounds, vhile at the same time it reduces at- mospheric disturbances and undesired noises.
