Theoretl it is possible, but not practical, as most tans | know. This, of course, is due to the | dissipation of the energy in the ether | space through which it passes. | The strength of the received emis afons of a high-powered broadcaster for example, is so small that they vmve to be amplified to make them audible. The received signal is oniy a tiny fraction of the power originally sent out from the transmitting sta tion. Tor this reason airplanes, auto mobiles and boats cannot be oper ated by radio. But, and this appears to be where many become confused. mobile bod can be controlled by radio. But that is somet entively different. Th power of locomotion in the form of a gas engine, a battery-driven tric motor ¢ actually_op air, on the water or on the is not the radio signal cefved The start the motor . stop it or cause 1 | paratus to function. It is then driven by its own source of power. Some savants view the transmis.| sion of power energy by radio waves | as quite possible, although it has not | been done successfully, so far, unless | the radio signals themselves are called | power despite their feeble strength 1f s0, then code and voice modulations are power. But nothing like enough | power to give light and heat been transmitted over any app distance. G This interesting question came upj in the radio debate in the House re- cently when Representative Bloom of | New York inquired if the licensing of statlons to transmit energy had been considered in the radio bill. Repre- sentative Scott of Michigan endeav-, ored to convince Mr. Bloom that it was heyond the scope of the measure, pointing out its impracticability, but | without success. | The ultimate result of these discus- stons was that the bill does concern the transmission of energy and power, and that suitable licenses would have to be procured by any one planning to enter this fleld of radio transmis sion, which Mr. Bloom claimed wa! of far greater interest to most of the public than was the receipt of music through the ether. Medical diagnosis by radio! The possibilities of this were re- cently glimpsed when, immediately after KOA, Denver, had broadcast the | heart beats of two of the musicians in its orchestra, a Texas physician wired the station that one heart was too slow and irregular, and the other was pounding twice as fast as it should normally. Perhaps some day expert instruc tion from noted specialists will guide | the hand of the country surgeon and epidemics will be checked and treated by “radio nursing.” in Congress. ans of | Grace Washburn, coloratura so- and Paul de Barry, pianist, will present the Kitt hour of music tonight, which, it appears, will vie with the United States Navy Band Orchestra for the headline honors on WRC's program. This is 2he one night in each week that WRC does not depend on WEAF to embei- lish its program, with the result that all of its features are local in origin. Aside from the Kitt hour and the Navy Band Orchestra, WRC will offer as supplementary attractions & din- ner concert by the Carlton Orcbéstra and a late dance program by the Le Paradis Band. The Navy Band Or- chestra’s concert will be entirely sym- phonic in character and will last for 80 minutes. The wave lengths were crowded with signals last night, but it took a se- lective set and careful dial adjust- ments to bring thém in fwith satisfac- tion. This s one situation that the proposed new radio commission can remedy. Reception conditions otherwise could be rated as good... Those signals that were tunable in spite of the jam came through with audibility and a fair degree of volume. Our little_excursion over the wave lengths produced WOAI, San Antonio: PWX, Havana: WGHB, Clearwater, Fla., and WHA, Madison, Wis, in addition to the usual crop of nearby stations, which came through in the face of the most adverse conditions LocalRadio Entertainment Thursday, February 3, 1927 NAA—Washington Navy Yard (4345 Meters). 10:05 a.m.—Weather Bureau reports. ~—Weather Bureau reports. ] | Mistaken impression | § Detroit: News: markets: weather tonk L.
