BOSTON, February 3 (Special).— ‘Wool market trading today was fea- tured by the stronger tendency in for- eign wools and substantial purchases of territory wools in the original bags. South American fours have moved at 29 and fives at 26 grease basis. Terfitcery lots comprising wool of half blood quality "or better, have rold at 1.03a1.06, clean basis in original bags, depending upon grades. Fleece wools of Ohio quality are quoted at 45a46 for fine and half-blood types, grease basis with three-eighths blood at 45 and quarter-blood at 44a45. Fine ter- ritory is quoted at 1.10al.12, fine French combing at 1.05a1.08, half blood at 1al.02, three-eights blood at 89292 and quarter-blood at 75a80, @ican basis. Many features of the amendments to the Federal farm loan act as pro- posed by the Treasury were opposed by Gov. Robert A. Cooper of the Farm Loan Board, appearing before the House hanking and currency commit- tee. Going over the proposed amend- ments with members of the commit- tee, Cooper pointed out that the amend- ment to section 23 changing regula- tions as to reserves of Federal Farm Loan banks would result in impair- ment of the eapital of many of the banks, which otherwise are sound. The Treasury bill also was opposed in S0 far as it would separate the super- visory and administrative powers of the board. . More Railroad Merger Reports. Yollowing the announcement that the Washington & Old Dominion Rail- way and the Western Maryland Rail- way are included in a proposed new trunk line between New York, Chi- cago and St. Louis, comes the Wall Street rumor that the Baltimore & Ohio is anxious to get control of the Western Maryland.and has already bought a part of the “Rockefeller in- terest” in this line. That the B. & O. s also after the Wheeling & Lake Erie and the Pittsburgh & West Vir- ginia is claimed today, although the officials refuse to affirm or deny these reports. Traffic_agreements were re- cently made with both of these roads by the B. & O. - Another Committee Named. Chairman J. D. New bond offerings in January established a record, surpassing any previous month by $135,000,000. The Federal land banks and joint stock land banks in 1926 made loans aggregating $159,050,236, the Federal banks accounting for $72,133,908 and the joint stock banks for $86,016,328. There was no reaction, but the volume of trading fell off and offer ings were in larger supply at current levels than in some days past. Evi dently the huge vo'ume of new financ ing was having some effect, although sentiment continued confident and with the money trend still downward demand for investment bonds was con sidered assured Among the few features of the day was the buying in Chica ireat Western ds, carrying the price above 2 for the first time on the move ment. Chicago Great Western is « ering charges about one and one-h: times, but up to today the bonds were still available on a 6 per cent basis and apparently cut of line with other railroad mortgages of its class. There was some speculative interest also in Minneapolis and St. Louis 4s and in Iowa Central 4s, an obligation of the same system. On the other hand, heavy profit-taking sales came into Western Maryland 4s, with a loss at one time amounting to almost 2 points from the recent high. Eri vertible D 4s were still strong, otherwise this part of the list turned dull. Quotations for Liberty bonds and Treasury notes were closely watched to see if they suggested any change in the bank rate, but trading was too small and prices varied too slightly to give any indication. The high-grade first mortgage investment rails hardly moved. Foreign bonds, which had gone lower in the two preceding ses- sions, hardened somewhat today, but there was no renewal of the brisk up- bidding of last week. In domestic industrials the oil bonds were still popular, with a further ad- vance in Barnsdall 6s with warrants. There was a heavy turnover in Manati Sugar 7%s, but without much change in price.
