Failing to find any one in the room except his wife and son, he rushed into an adjoinng room and awakened W. C. Holt, a garage employe. Leav- ing the door to his wife’s room open, he then threatened to Kill Holt, she gaid, but on finding him unarmed, told Holt if he failed to leave town in three hours he would shoot him. Holt fled. Shortly before Mayo left the jail he promised a reporter a “wild story.” 7 “I was 17 when I robbed my first bank. It netted me $30,000," he told the reporter. “I had all the money in | the world, it seemed to me, and it| went like water. When I get out of here, I am going straight.” Mayo was sentenced to 21 years in the Federal Penitentiary at Leaven- | worth, Kans., for robbery of a Kansas bank. S DR. J. A. H. KEITH TO HEAD PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOLS ‘Well Known Educator Selected as State Superintendent of Public Instruction. By the Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA, January 17— John A. H. Keith of Indiana, Pa., has been selected as State superin- tendent of public instruction, Gov.- elect John S. Fisher announced last night. Mr. Fisher takes office next Tuesday. Mr. Keith is widely known in the Middle West. Born at Homer, IIL, in 1869, he was a teacher in the training school department of the II- linois Normal School and taught peda- gogy and psychology in the Northern Tllinois State Normal School. In 1907 he was elected president of the State - Normal School at Oshkosh, Wis., com- ing to the Indiana (Pa.) State Nor- mal School in 1917. Dr. Keith has written extensively on educational fubjects and is joint editor with Dr. William C. Bagley of the New York Teachers' College, of th American Teachers' College = Se- ries, which includes text books on education. Convicts Uninjured in Fire.
