BANK CALL TODAY SHOWS| 11 of 20 Compiled Report Losses Due to Natural and Seasonal Causes—Com-~ parison Hardly Fair. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Controller McIntosh today issued a call for the condition of District of Columbia banks as of December 31. Eleven of the 20 Washington banks | which The Star was able to reach in the very brief time available for ob- taining so many figures, reported losses In comparison with the figures of the last call on June 30. These losses, however, were antici- pated and were due to abnormal con- ditions existing at the close of the vear. The figures give hardly a fair plcture of the real banking situation in Washington, according to leading bankers in the city. Heavy withdrawals in many banks were made for meeting real and per- sonal taxes. Large sums were also taken out to pay income taxes. The intangible tax made another drain on depos Christmas savings club funds were 8. also paid out early in December, which fook more than $5,000,000 from the banks and only a portion of this as been put back into the 1927 sav- ings clubs and into permanent sav- ings. Heavy check payments in meeting Christmas shopping bills have also been a factor in reducing bank de- posits. Considerable sums_have been withdrawn for New Year investment, bankers report, thus adding one more factor to explain why so many of the banks have not been able to keep up with the deposits reported on the June call. | (*) This table carries quotations received up to 3:15 p.m. A com- plete table will be published in the 5:30 Edition. HUGH Seecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 3 market started the vear with trading quiet and prices firm for high-grade domestic and foreign descriptions and slightly reactionary for the more speculative home obligations. In this respect it differed not at all from the trading of the week before. The best showing was made by the Liberties, among the investment issues, and by the French in the for elgn group. The third 4% Liberties were the strongest of the United States Government obligations, a vancing earlier in the day to a higher point than reached at any time during 1926. There may have been some significance in the fact that partic ular issue picked out for leadership was that of shortest terms. In tho closing month of last year it was al ways the Treasury bonds of the long est maturity rather than the Liberties that were favored in the buying. There was. however, no weaknes today in either group. French bonds were not quite as active as in the preceding sessions, but they maf tained their positions well. Fre 7145, were the favorite today, selling above anything recorded last vear o for that matter since they w issued. This is the one entirel; callable French bond. French duplicated their previous record higi at par and Parls, Lyon and Mediter- ranean s at 88 were up a half poin and above the 1926 high. Elsewher in the foreign list the feature wa Finland 61s, alsoa non-callable bond w_hxzch duplicated the previous high o T%. ‘The bond not ‘The irregularity in domestic bonds was principally in evidence in con | vertible issues. International Tel { phone and Telegraph 513s and Granby Mining 71s were higher, but Barns dall 6s were down a half point and Andes Mining Anaconda 7s and Chile Copper Gs were off fractionally Chicago Raflway 5s ran up a point at 76, but little interest was taken in the local tractions. Seaboard Air Line 6s, accounted for most of the trading among tho speculative rails. Denver and Ric Grande Western 55 improved moder ately, but St. LoulsSan Francisco incomes yielded.
