TOKIO, December 29.—Imperial princes not connected with the present ruling family of Japan apparently are a drug on the royalty market, and in the future numerous princes who are third, fourth and fifth sons are to be re- duced to the rank of subjects. i The growth of the imperial fam ilies in recent years is sald to have caused some anxiety to the authorities owing to the fact that princes and princeses are entitled to subsidies from the treasury. Therefore, it was decided to reduce the rank of many of the vounger ones. Far from resenting their reduc- tion to pl ubjects, many of the young pr their exalte fettered by T cold and has gone into Teliement for several days. The illness is not serious. Previous! “Santa J. John Henry Coates, colored, 49 years old, was shot and eritically wounded by Policeman E. L. Shelton of the second precinct vesterday afternoon at the entrance to Coates’ home, in the rear of 1249 Six-and-a-half street, when, according to Shelton, the man refused a command to ‘‘wait a minute” and moved his hand toward his hip with a menacing gesture. Shelton was patrolling his beat near Six-and-a-half and N streets, according to a report filed with police officials, when he heard the sound of a shot Coates was pointed out to Shelton by a bystander as the man who had fired the shot. elton went in pur- i ling him to the door . Shelton called to the col- ored man to wait a minute, Coates, it was reported refused. When he moved his hand toward his hip pocket, Shelton reported, he fired, fearing his own life in danger. After the shooting Coates was taken to Freedmen's Hospital at the direc- tion of Shelton and Policeman B. A. Henry, who reached the scene just after the shot was fired. At the hos- ita ysiclans learned the bullet had ed through the liver, inflicting a us wound, and physicians today were doubtful as to whether he will recover. Policeman Henry reported searching the wounded man and finding a pistol right hip pocket. It had one cartridge and one empty shell in it. To prevent the wounded man from leaving the hospital in event of recov- ery a charge of discharging firearms on the street was preferred against him at the second precinct. e Turkish girls are said to be bobbing and shingling their hair even faster than those of New York or London. 674.57 | e REAL ESTATE LOANS BUSINESS, APARTMENT.
