- $ 'WOULD L CANA Professor Says Mississippi Deposits Double Amount -..of Dirt Removed. By the Aseociated Press = MADISON, Wis, December 29.— Twice the amount of earth removed in digging the Panama Canal is deposit- ed gnngally Ini the Gulf of Mexico by the M)‘q‘ ppl River, A. . Trow- bridge o Unliversity of Iowa told the Geologicil Soclety of America today. PicKing up erumbs of soll along its leisurely co of the count tons of deposits on the floor of the Buif: = For a radius of three miles from the pass the sediment is so heavy as ap- parently to inhibit marine life, he concluded from examination of sam- ples collected Ly the Coast and Geo- detic Survey. Many and varied minerals were found in the samples, and some evi- dently were at the end of a long jour- ney from the “glaciated region” above St Louis. Earth Likened to Billlard Ball. Comparison of the earth to an ivory billiard ball, which enables i commodate itself without disa strains and stresses, was ma yesterday by Dr. T. C. Chamberlain of the University of Chicago, in ad- dressi: the society”. In Chamberlain’s theory the planet is an elastic sphere consisting of great segments, thousands of miles deep, resting upon a solid core and riveted together by holts of igneous material running thr the differ- ent segments. This s, he said, for the process of ad. nt which fs still going on, causing thrusts, grinding and upheavals, creating liquid rock through the heat - of friction. According to his theory. the earth was formed by a merger of particles dispersed by the sun, when a star ac- cidentally came close to it. Gold and Tin in Deepest Soil. It was shown by Dr. W. H. Em. mons, head of the department of geology at University of Minnesota, that gold and tin occur at the great- est depths in the earth, while other metals are found in higher stratas. In a paper on the zonal arrangements ©f metals, he pointed out that these two metals were succeeded upward toward the surface by copper, zinc lead, leadsilver, arsenic, antimony and mercury. . The same arrangement is present- horizontally, - he said, -verify- ing this occurrence of ores by ex- amples in Canada, Germany and Great Britain, Dr. Emmons brought together and classified into five groups all known ore deposits. SUCTION HELD CHIEF AID TO KEEP PLANES IN AIR Provides 75 Per Cent of Sustaining Power Due to Formation of Wings. By the Associated Press. DAYTON, Ohio, December 20— What holds up an’ airplane? Buoyancy ? Momentum? Both guesses are wrong. Suction on the top surface of the Wing provides 75 per cent of the sus- taining power that kéeps the planes from fluttering down. Theé wing’s front edge is like the sharp edge of a wedge and the thick- ness resches its maximum a few inches back. Then the top surface slopes down to a thin rear edge. The wedge “splits” the air and sends it streaming back and up in practically a straight lime. The swift rush of air creates a partial vacuum just above the surface of the wing and back of the thickest part. It is this partial vacuum that does three- | fourths of the tr aero-dynamic engineers at the nment flving fields here assert. oyancy, they admit, does the rest RAINicLDSES ROADS.
