A = s } ) 2 Men's Hylo Felt Slippers, $2.50. Thus the number of thin lines be- » > tween two heavy lines represents the number of times the tuning fork has vibrated in half a second. Each of the thin lines represents a thousandth of a second and measurements of the space between them can easily be made which will carry the time divi- sion into hundred thousandths of a second. X > The tuning fork and the pendulum | g act as checks on each other. The ac- curacy of each could be tested, de- pending upon which was agreed upon as the standard. Thus if it Swas agreed that the pendulum was com- pleting its swing in exactly half a . gecond and the tuning fork was shown by the film to be vibrating only 450 times in this period, the fork could be set down as inaccurate. On the other hand it might be assumed that the fork was vibrating ekactly 1,000 times in a second and the pendu- lum would be at fault. Use Special Forks. Tuning forks can be made with wvarying vibratory rates and extremely accurate time measurements could be made with an instrument vibrating only 100 times a second instead of a thousand. The behavior of a tuning fork still is rather obscure, according to P. P. Quale, of the sound labora- tory, who has been in charge of con- structing the apparatus and much re- mains for scientists to find out. For instance, the vibrations will vary considerably with temperature changes—just why is uncertain. Among the scientific researches (First Floor, The Hecht Co.) (Second Floor, The Hecht Co.) 7 O A A AT & A UGG RS which may be greatly aided by the extremely accurate time measure- ments made possible by this method are the gravity measurcments of the Coast and Geodetic Survey. But the great value at present will be in de- termining the vibratory rate of vari- ous tuning forks. .
