ANNULMENT CITED 1891 Action Recalled in Con- nection With Vanderbilt Decision at Rome. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, November 30.—In con- nection with discussion of the annul- ment by a Roman Catholic tribunal of the Episcopalian Marlborough-Vander- bilt marriage the New York Times to- day recalls that in 1891 four Episco- palian bishops annuled a marriage under similar circumstances. Bishop Willlam T. Manning of the Episcopal diocese of New York criti- cized the Catholic annulment as an invasion of American civil rights and an affront to his church. The annulment in 1891 dissolved the marriage, as far as the church was concerned, of Almet F. john, daughter of Bishop A. N. Little- john, who officiated at the wedding of the Duke of Marlborough and Con- suelo Vanderbilt in 1905. The Jenks-Littlejohn wedding took place in 1878, and was a social event of the day. Bishop John Williams of Connecticut presided, and Walker Blaine, son of James G. Blaine, was best man. The wedding gifts were valued at $50,000. After nearly 13 years of married life, Mrs. Jenks obtained a divorce in Newport, R. I., charging abandon- ment and non-support, which were not grounds for divorce in New York, nor recognized by the . Episcopal Church. The next month Bishop Lit- tlejohn called a meeting of four bish- ops, who issued a decree declaring the marriage null and vold. The grounds were not disclosed. The bishops who signed the decres were Bishop Wil- liams of Connecticut, who had mar ried the couple; Bishop John Scar- borough of New Jerse§, Bishop Thom- as Starkey of Newark .and Bishop Henry C. Potter of New York. Between the time of the divorce and the annulment Mr. Jenks mar- ried again. He dled in 1924. The en- Charles A. Jessup, rector of the Epis- copal Church at Hollis, N. The ceremony was perform- ed in a New York Episcopal Church bride as the only witnesses. CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATIONS DISCUSS VOTE FORD. C.
