NEW YORK, October «23.—The cotton madrket was comparatively quiet today, with early advances on pre-bureau covering followed by re- actions. January contracts sold up from 1241 to '12.55 and closed at 12.43, with the general market closing barely steady at net advances of 4 to 7 points. Opening prices were 5 to 7 points higher in response to relatively steady Liverpool cables. Few selling orders | appeared from the South at the start, which probably increased the disposi- tlon of recent sellers to take profits for over the week end, and the Gov- ernment crop report due on Monday. At any rate, covering was consider- ably in evidence and prices worked up to 12.48 for December, while March sold at 12.81, or about 18 to 21 points net higher. As the market approached the 12%- cent level for December and 13 cents for May, offerings increased “slightly and there was a little more Southern selling in the late trading, with-last prices showing reactions of 12 to 15 points from the best. Most of the day's business was sup- posed to represent evening up of ac- counts, and the fluctuations were not regarded as indicating any change of sentiment as to the probable showing of the official crop figures on Mon- day. Another private crop report placed the indicated yield at 16,920, -| 000 bales, compared with an end Sep- | tember report of 15,961,000. Up to the close of business on Saturday, four of | these private midmanth reports had been issued, with estimates on the in- dicated crop ranging from 16,810,000 ug) to 17,200,000 and averaging 16, 989,000 bales. The market on the whole, as indi- cated by Friday's canvass of Cotton Exchange members, was supposed to be expecting a Government report of around or slightly above 17,000,000, and traders recently have been talk- Ing probable ginnings of slightly over 9,000,000 bales to October 18. Nat- urally, more or less uncertainty as to the showing of the bureau was in evidence, however, and no doubt ac- counted largely for the disposition to even up accounts before the close of today's trading. Private cables reported smaller hedge selling in Liverpool, with prices steady on trade calling and covering. STOCK DECLINES BROUGHT T0 HALT General Business Situation Is Irregular—Cotton in Drastic Decline. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 23.—Halting of the decline in the stock market, which had been under way with few interruptions for three successive weeks; further irregularity in the general business situation; a decline in cotton prices to the lowest levels since 1921; a rally in wheat prices; a temporary easing of call money rates and the establishment of new 1926 high levels by the Norwegian, Italian and Japanese exchanges co- incident with new lows im sterling and the Chinese currencies, were the outstanding developments in this week’s financial and commodity markets. Fears that the next Government jcrop estimate might place the year's production abeve 17,000,000 bales in- spired the renewed liquidation in the cotton market. On the other hand, | wheat was marked up on the theory | that the United States has reached the maximum visible supply and on reports of a better export demand. The reported destruction of several hundred thousand tons of sugar in the Cuban storm had a stiffening tendency on raw and reflned prices. COFFEE FUTURES GAIN. NEW YORK, October 22 (#).—The market for coffee futures was higher again today, owing to the continued firmness of Rio exchango rates and covering or rebuying by recent sel!- ers. The opening was 4 to 22 points higher and March sold up to 15.28, closing at 15.20. The general market closed at net advances of 8 to 30 points. Sales estimated, $1,000 bags. Closing quotations: December, 15.80: January, 15.65; March, 15.20; May, 14.74; July, 14.48; September, 13.96 Spot coffee quiet; Rio 7s, 1612; Santos 4s, 20% to 20%. Cost and freight offers included part Bourbons 3s and 58 at 19.50 to 19.85. Rio exchange on London 1-16d higher; dollar buying rate, 50 refs lower. Rio market, 100 to 150 refs higher; Santos, 100 to 250 reis higher.
