Into the Thin Air, Frank Hyatt recelved the ring from Paul, but he did not immediately return with it to Gaines, for catching sight of the conductor he beckoned him into the empty drawing room. “Conductor,” he said, “my partner and I are in a sense responsible for the affairs of the Reynolds family, and T cannot help feeling some anx- ity over the events of today. We were convinced that the Italian was dead, yet he was alive, in some kind of a trance! It is un- accountable. I am certain that he has some connection with the girl, but as neither one will admit it our responsibility in the matter ceases. You are worried because Mr. Reynolds so evidently interested in the girl?" “Yes. His wealth and position make him an easy prey. His brother may also wish to injure his good ame. He insists that he is respon- sible for this girl, going so far as desiring to take her home to his step- mother., 1 should feel grateful for any additional information you can give me, It will be strictly confi- dential. Frank Hyatt’s serious look gave way to a broad grin. ‘Lots of fight left in that old bird!" he remarked. “We'll be glad to do anything we can to help you at any time, Mr. Iyatt.” the conductor arose, “and the voung lady will be cared for by the Salvation Army. Mr. Reynolds can- not object. divert his mind. I will see you later.” Frank Hyatt was left alone and his hand slipped into his pocket, finger- ing the ring which Paul had given him. Should he or should he not show i to Gaines? What was Gaines do- ing on the train? Whom was he trail- ing? What information was he with- holding? Frank's mind went back to he Reynolds will and codicil. Was i possible that Mrs. Revnolds was employing Gaines to follow Paul? What interest could she have in so doing? His thoughts went around and around in a circle, and still he pondered over these questions, the ‘ing held tightly in his hand. Darkness had fallen, and in the dimly lighted train Paul sat with Carolita in w tension which throbbed painfully, penetrating to his ilu}PI" most being, while from time to time lie urge: Carolita, 1 can’t believe it of you! 1 can't! ou must tell me what you have done with your ring! Il get her to keep an eye on the girl. Paul obeyed, after making sure that ‘he Italian had not returned to the car. He was determined that the man chould have no opportunity to speak with Carolita. He had reached a point where he distrusted every one! It was halt an hour before Gaines joined him in the smoking compart- ment, followed by Frank Hyatt. Sorry to have been so long nes sald, “but I had several little things to attend to before conferring | Sit down, Hyatt. What I with you to Reynolds will interest have to you as % Paul 1l was on the point of ques- tioning him about the ring, but Gaines | allowed him no opportunity. “Frank Hyatt wants to know what I am doing on this train, I evaded his questions for a time, because in our nrofession we must keep our mouths pretty tightly closed. I foresaw an inquest, serious embarrassment for her, to say the least. She is above reproach, Mr. Reynolds, but placed in an ambigu- ous position. I can assure you that she will be able to explain everything to your complete satisfaction at a later time. For the present it will be best not to worry her further.” “Gaines,” Paul protested, “we all know that the Reynolds family can't keep out of this mixup, for in spite of everything you can do Walter is defl- nitely involved with this man, if not with the girl herseif!"” “Yes, but that hardly affects you. The world knows that Walter was disinherited by your father, which will, as far as your family is con- cerned, mitigate any disagreeable publicity he may incur. You are in a different position. Caution must be_your watchword!” Paul’s mouth was tightly closed, his jaws set. “Gaines,” he sald, after a pause, | %are you tactfully breaking the news | that we have run into something con- | nected with my family affairs? What's the meaning of all this sidestepping? What do you think I am, a babe in | arms?” He caught a warning look from Hyatt and knew instinctively that his friend had not yet revealed | the discovery of the ruby, and sud- denly with all his soul he distrusted this detective who knew so much thitt he did not tell! “Certainly I don't take you for a | babe in arms,” Gaines appeared un- | disturbed, “but, as this is my line of | business and not yours, T suggest that you allow me to finish my journey | with its errand, and postpone your interest in 't until I can assist you personally. I am sure that Hyatt will agree that this is the best plan. Blackmall is an easy game and a mighty tough one to beat, and until we know what Walter and this for- eigner are puiling off, it's well for us all to go slowly.” “So, it's blackmail you fear,” Paul replied more calmly; “in that case why have you allowed Walter to make a get-away “I'm not sure it's blackmail, but it's the natural inference following such unusual occurrences. Walter hasn’t gone far.” Gaines replied easily “He'll be in Los Angeles within a week or I miss my guess! The thing | for you to do is to go to a hotel and forget this miserable business. To- morrow you can continue to Santa Barbara as planned. 1 will keep in touch with Hyatt and through him vou can be assured of the girl's safety. RISCILLA went out to get the | mail which the postman had | Just left in the box. She | hoped that there would be a | letter from Stanley’s _sister. It would cheer him so much. But in- stead there was only her monthly woman'’s journal. | " She went with it to the door of the bedroom, intending to give it to her | husband 'to read, but when she looked |in she saw that he had fallen asleep. | So she tiptoed back to the Kitchen with it and sat down to look at it herself. ‘Absently she turned the fresh pages, seeking distraction In the advertise- ments from her harassment of mind. | | A pink slip fell out and she noted the usual warning, ““Your subscription ex- pires with this number.” Well, she could not renew her subscription. There was no money for any but the smallest necessities, now that Stanley | was laid up. | M8 5e had been hurt at his work three weeks before, and the doctors agreed l that it would take a long time for | bone and sinew to mend. Besides, | there was the shock to his nervous | system. Because he worked independ- ently at his trade of carpentering | there was no outside help, not even | insurance. They must draw on their small savings for everything. i ‘ “I wish I could do something, | Priscilla sighed. | 'She turned another page and saw the following advertisement: ! uGood housewives, all! Send in your best cake recipes and receive a | prize. A prize! | { Priscilla’s interest quick- ened somewhat. She read on eagerly. | There were other prizes—six-others | but it was upon the first prize that | she fixed her wistful gaze. A thou- | sand dollars: What would a thousand dollars not do for her and Stanley in | this unexpected stress? The advertisement fascinated her. She could not get away from it When she had read it until she knew it by heart she got out her recipe book and studied that. In it, written in faded ink with a tremulous hand, were her grandmother's famous cake recipes. A dozen eggs—half-dozen eggs they called for. Eggs had been | plentiful and cheap those days. No, | none of these would do.. She brushed | over the yvellowed pages swiftly. Here | her mother had begun to write, for the cook book was a family affair. The delicate, sloping handwriting did not -all for so many eggs, but it de- manded expensive fruit and cream nd heavy icing. She shook her head over these also. Then began her own i record, scribbled in pencil. loaf cake,” “Economy layer cake,” “Shadowshine.” ~She paused there reflectively, recalling the morn ing when her stores were low and she had needed a cake. Ah, that was a call for her wits! But she had made the cake, and looking at it she had been inspired by the shadows flecking the sunshine that lay upon their bit of open lawn to name it Shadowshine. ‘And at the church supper where it had been eaten and praised nobody had known that she had taken a little of this, a pinch of that, an atom of the other thing—whatever remained in her spice box and sugar bowl—and made the cake. Since then she had made the Shadowshine many times and per- fected it. It came to her that this was the recipe she would use and she would send it in. She could no more taan fail. Carefully she copled the recipe, added her name and address and in- closed the sheet of note paper in an envelope. Then, slipping out, she dropped it in the letter box on the | corner. She did mnot forget about it, but after that one burst of inspiration it ceased to mean anything to her. There was her work and Stanley to be taken care of. Then, too, Spring was at hand and the garden must be made and the house cleaned. Oh, there was | plenty to do for one small woman! All the time the savings account dwindled, although Priscilia econo- mized more than ever. She was an adept at economizing already, but now she planned and puzzled. Tt takes a genius to get four good din- ners out of a cheap soupbone. But Priscilla did it and smiled over the achievement, and Stanley ate and se- cretly hoped that she was mot being extravagant. Stanley dig not mend as he should, THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 192! l “Aren't you taking a deal of responsibility upon yo 1?7 Paul asked grimly. “Why this sudden in- terest in my personal affalrs? I must confess that I don’t enjoy it. Upon whose authority are you acting? May I ask if you knew that I would be on this train? Is it possible that you are on my tirail as well as the girl's?” . am advising you in the capacity of a family friend and former employe of your father. Quite frankly and upon my honor I had not an idea that you were on this train. I had never seen you before. I did not know your name until this morning. I most certainly am not following you. Are you satisfled?” “Then,” said Paul, “I cannot imag- ine what this Pullman car tempest is all about. Talk about the movies, I feel as If I were the latest edition of Hamlet! However, since you and Frank are both so determined to wrap me In cotton-wool, all air ex- cluded, I suppose I must submit.” He might have added: “And since Caro- lita is equally determined to put me out of her life—there is not much use of going on with the thing any- way.” His thoughts were bitter enough just then. It was nearing midnight and he had put in a long, hard day, crammed to overflowing with emotion, anxiety, and a premo- nition of disaster that would not be silenced in spite of all the arguments his well-trained mind could summon. Ridiculous for a man of 25 to have to admit that he had fallen. in love with a girl he had known but a few hours, a maiden wrapped in mystery, one who was followed by a most un- desirable Italian and shadowed by a detective! Yet, he could not deny the intense feeling which swept him at the mere thought of Carolita, the emo- tion produced by the sight of her exquisite dark beauty, the appeal of her helplessness, the chivalry awak- ened in him by her urgent need of protection! She was not the first girl who had entered his life, but he had never before proposed marriage, or wanted to! It was a crushing blow to have his first real love come in such a guise, and for a while he allowed Gaines and Frank to chat along upon other matters, his own thoughts absorbed in self-pity and re- gret. “My goodness, we're almost in!" Frank’s exclamation roused him. Paul sprang to his feet. “I thought Caines was here with ou!" Y “You've been asleep! Better get our stuff together,” but Paul had al- ready run back to the Pullman, and returning met him in the small | aisle, his eyes stern and angry. “Where's Carolita?” he cried, while at the same time the Salvationists were heard calling the girl’s name. “Carolita! Carolita! Where are you?” The train had come to a stop, and shouting to the Salvationists to search the dressing room, the young men dashed forward, only to find themselves intercepted by a pile of opening the Pullman door. “Where’s the young lady, porter?” they both cried. “De little lady from lower two? She done gone fohwad, boss, a while back!" ~(Continued in, Tomorrow’s Star.) NG STORY and the doctor began to hint that he might have to go to the hospital for additional treatment. There came a | time when instead of hinting he in- sisted. “It's your only chance of becoming a sound man, Stanley,” he told him. “Well,” Stanley said after a mo- ment, “I suppose I'll have to go then,” and he looked confidently into Priscilla’s blue eyes. And Priscilla looked back as reas- suringly as if hospital treatment of that kind did not cost money. “Of course, you must go,"” she said. She could not borrow money when there is no hope of ever getting it paid. She would stake every cent| they had to send him. And while he ‘was gone she would work. “I'll go out by the day,” she decided, “but Stanley need never know.” Two days later Dr. Kemp took Stanley to the hospital. Stanley went ‘with his heart full of hope, and Pris- cilla stayed behind with her heart full of @etermination. The next day she got her first job helping Mrs. Shattuck clean house. | She had never worked 8o hard in her | life, but that night she counted $2 with blistered hands. That night also she wrote an encouraging letter to her husband. Two weeks passed. There was plenty of work, for it was house- cleaning time. Priscilla did not miss a single week day of earning her $2. And, oh, she lived on so little! At night she cried because she didn’t| know vet how Stanley was coming | home. 1 Then one night as she came home from work she found a letter in her mail box. She was so tired that just for an instant she could not think. Instead she opened the envelope, and there was a letter and a long pink slip of paper. Blessed paper! A check! Priscilla always thought that she must have fainted away, for it was several minutes before she remem- bered who or where she was. Then she read those figures over again. any time a check for $1,000 is impres- sive, and now it seemed a miracle. Next morning came a letter from Stanley. He was coming home sound. “I'll be back on my job in a week,” he_wrote. Priscilla did not write about the check. She wanted to tell him her- self. But she did not go to work next day. She stayed at home to put the house in order for Stanley. As she swept and dusted she sang like a girl. “‘Shadowshine,” she thought. “Well, we've had the shadow. Now comes the shine!” (Copyright. 1926.) THE END. | Capture Strange Fish. In exploring the South Sea scien- tists from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History captured that inter- esting specimen, the siphonophore, known to sailors and fishermen as the Portuguese Man of War, a fish with many long tentacles on which nature places minute bombs, which explode when they land on a victim, sending tiny darts deep into the flesh of the hapless prey, landing it for food for the siphonophore.
