By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 2.—A little prince, heir to one of the oldest titles in Italy, was born and died aboard the liner Carmania during her voyage from Southampton, England, which ended here yesterday. The Prince and Princess Guido Pignatelll de Montecalyo were coming to America that their child might be born in his mother’s native country. The stork outsped the ocean liner, however, and the princess gave birth to a boy last Monday. The baby died Wednesday. The princess was formerly Miss Constance Grenelle Wilcox of New York and Madison, Conn. She mar- ried Prince de Montecalvo last August. FRANCIS Italian Throngs Journey to Assist to Celebrate 700th Anniversary of Death. . By the Associated Press. ASSISI, Italy, August 2.—From King to the lowllest peasant, all Ttaly joined yesterday in ceremonies mark- ing the opening ef the observance of the 700th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi ‘ King Victor Emmanuel was - the central figure In the Tuscan celebra- tion at the famous Monastery of Verna, where St. Francis lived, He was accompanied by Cardinal Mis- trangelo, archbishop of Florence, and Prof. Fedele, Fasclst minister of public instructfon.- The cardinal expressed gratification over what the Italian government had done to restore the Franciscan churches and monuments in Assisi to their original beauty and in building a road leading to the monastery in Verna, among other things. Many Pilgrims Present. The celeBration assumed its mast imposing character here. Before the tomb of the saint all bishops of Umbrja gathered around Mgr. Luddi, bishop of Assisi, while the faithful poured in from all parts of the world. Some came by train, others by auto- mobile, but many, llke the ancient pilgrims, journeyed on foot, carrying offerings and holy images. Large numbers of worshipers are sleeping In the arcade around the church square built about seven cen: turies ago to shelter Pilgrims. Despite rain, the city presented ¢ gala appearance, decorated with flow- ers, flags and tapestries. Tonight the brillantly illuminated slopes of the hill on which Assisi stands appeared in the distance as if ablaze. The climax of the ceremonies cor- sisted of a pontifical mass in the his- torical cathedral where St. Francis of Assisi was baptized. This was followed by a procession which, crossing the city, went to the tomb of the saint, as bells pealed, cannon boomed and bands played. St. Francis of Assisi was essential: 1y a preacher of the brotherhood of men and the ideal of service. He was brn in 1182, the son of a merchant in Assisi, and his conversion camé after a severe fllness. Then he freed himself of his possessions, and, with & group of followers, devoted himself to serving his fellow men. Later in life there came to him the vision of Christ, and he wrote his great hymn to the sun when blindness had over- taken him. After St. Francis' death, in 1326, one of his followers used his influence to bring about the building of the magnificent church and monastery of St. Francis of Assisi.
