OPERATIC CONGERT “ON WRC TONIGHT - Hotel Trio, Nature Talk and . Piano Recital Also Fea- tures of Program. The Monday night operatic concert, presented by the WEAF Grand Opera Co., and a concert by the Wardman Park trio, directed by Sam Udrin, will be the principal musiea] features of WRC's pro- gram to be broad- cast tonight. The opera presenta- tion' is scheduled for 9_o'clock, and the Wardman Park concert will be broadcast dur- ing the preceding hour. The earlier pro- gram arranged by WRC, which con- tinues several of the features which formerly wers on the pro-. p. 5. RIDSDALE. srams of WCAP, will bring to the radio audience P. S. Ridsdale, editor of Nature Magazine, who will discuss “Queer Quirks of Na- ture—Midsummer Night's Jazz,” and Prof. David Lumsden of the De. partment of Agriculture, who will de- liver a talk on “The Orchid—The Royal Family of Plants.” Between these two radio talks & piana recital will be presented from WRC's studio by Gertrude Smallwood, popular Washington planist. WRC's program will be opened with a sports resume beginning at 7 o'clock. The noon hour organ recital, broad- cast from the studios of the Homer D. Kitt, Plano Co., was presented by Henry Smidt-Gregor, and was followed by an hour of luncheon music played by Meyer Davis' New Willard Hotel Orchestra, under the direction of samuel Korman. . At 4 o'clock this afternoon, WRC will broadcast the third game of the series being played in St. Louis be- tween the \ashington American League Champions and the Browns. Reports of five and even ten fold in- creases of power by United States ‘broadcasting stations are the least of Ehe worries of the Department of Com- merce at present. Boasting the power used for broad- rasting costs money, and, except in Yhe cases of radio or electric manufac- turers who are searching for a method ©f national distribution of radio pro- grams and are using “super-power for experimental purposes, is hardly worth the expefise. The onekilowatt station—or, at ‘best, a transmitter with an output of five kilowatts—is more than sufficient 1o eerve as a purely local medium of broadcasting, it was explained. More- over, the.manufacture of transmitters of greater power than_five kilowatts #0 far has not been attempted except in rare cases. Crosley Plans Step-up. Recently plans for increases in power have been announced at several stations, the largest of which is that planned, by the Crosley Radio Corpora- tion, where a 50,000.watt transmitter, it is said, will supplant the present 5,000-watt equipment. A suggestion that the next logical step-up in power from the 50.000-watt mark, which has been used by WGY and WJZ, would be to 500.000 watts, was recently of- fered by the General Electric no actual attempt to prov mitter capable of work with such a power has been made. A number of stations scattered throughout the country are reported ‘to be preparing to step their power up to the 5,000-watt figure, the limit of the general run of manufactured transmitters. Other stations formerly operating on less than 1,000 watts are expected to go to the onekilowatt rating. Would Necessitate Junking. 1t was pointed out further that any radical increases in power used at the majority of stations would necessitate the junking of the present plants and the purchase and installation of en- tirely new apparatus. ‘The present type of 50 and 100 watt stations, it was said, could hardly be operated at higher power, and the 500 to 1,000 watt transmitters cannot be expected to function efiiciently above those figures. i NR AMBULANCE BUILT. Eoviet May Order 8 Similar to 7- Passenger German Craft. BERLIN, August 2 (#).—The first ommercial air ambulance has been completed for the German Air Service at the Dornier-Wal plant at Frisdrich- ghafen. It is a seven passenger, high-spsed plane. The interior is enameled to facilitate disinfection and §t contains two berths for seriously svounded, four invalid chairs and room for two attendants. Representatives of the Soviet gov- ernment have taken trial flights in the plane, and it is reported an order for at least six of the air ambulances will be placed by. the Sovietsy ok Berattara 3 lSo—lelloM Conn.: Hub v o Rarey um. Now is the time to think about the type you are going to buy so that you will have plenty of time to look around and find out the type you want to buy. Of course, as in everything else, there are certain things for which you should look in buying a receiver. Bear in mind that, after all, the best test to apply to a receiver is that of actually having it perform in your own home. You cannot expect a dealer to supply vou with test re- ceivers for a year hefore you select one, but any wide-awake dealer will meet you more than half way in order to make a sale. Most dealers have display rooms in which they give demonstrations. It is wise to have several sets demonstrat- ed in'the display room so that you can decide for yourself the relative merits of the various instruments when tested under similar conditions. Your selection of the best of a group of receivers can very easily be done in the dealer's showroom. After vou have picked out the best of all thy which he handles. you can then ask for a home demonstration. so that you can be suro it will perform properly in your own home. Such a demonstra- tion of one or two sets in your own home is easily arranged, and the deal- er will be glad to do that for you. Difference in Cost. The first thing vou must decide upon, as far as the mechanics of the receiver are concerned, is whether you want a receiver that will require an outside aerial or one which oper- ates on an indoor or loop aerial. The indoor aerial receiver will cost more, but will eliminate the necessity of the trouble of putting up lnd taking down an outside aerial. ‘When once installed, however, the outdoor aerial receiver is usually neater than the loop aerial receiver unless the loop receiver has a self- contained or hidden loop. It is practically impossible to go into & detailed discussion of circuits in this article. Most sets nowadays l.re no longer being sold on the basis circuits, but on performance, and .1 en only actual test will tell you whether or not the set will be satis- factory. Sets Much Neater. Radio receivers are no longer a ere collection of sets, batt: and unk” strewn all over the place. Better decide beforehand whether you want just a receiver and then figure out where you are going to put the batteries, or re on getting either one of the seif-contall outfits with mury compartments or |0W0r. 2 separate receiver and table wllh built-in loudspeaker and-battery and charger compartments. Tn the latter case the matching of the receiver cabimet and table will is to be considered. Also decide on vour source of cur- Kol Orchsetra.
