. S FORFIGN TRADE| =225 BALANCE DECLINES 2= Change Seen as Sign of Gain in Foreign Production anid American Buying Power. Foreign trade of the United States, ‘even though it maintained & favorable trade balance for the fiscal year ended June 30, dropped from-a balance of $1,040,452,789 for the previous year to $286,828,711. On the basis of preliminary figures for June, when exports were $338,000,- 000 and imports $337,000,000, the !o(l.l exports for the year were placed b the Commerce Department at §4, TSI 516,204, a drop of $111,064,960, while Amports aggre; $4, I“.GH.(’I. an increase of $642,659,118. Secretary Hoover and other depart- ment officials saw no reason for alarm at the figures. On the other hand, they said the increased imports, due - 1o higher quantitative purchases and some price fluctuations upward, in- dicated that foreign industries were showing increased activity and that the American purchasing power was expanding along with the demand for foreign-made goods. Near Low Record. The favorable balance for the last fiscal year was the lowest since the war, with the exception of 1923, when it was $175,774,000. The export de- cline, which amounted to about 2% per cent for the year ended June 30, was attributed by Mr. Hoover to lower prices for cotton and decreased grain production, exports of these items alone falling off more than $420,000,: 0. The increase in imports, about 17 r cent, was descirbed as due to r quantities of raw ‘materials imported and the increase in prices of some lines. Despite the greatly reduced mer- chandife balance, there was a net in- ‘ward movement of gold of §97,288,026 during the year, as compared with a net outward movement of $114,584,- 562 for the previous vear. Gold ex- ports totaled $113,438,459, a decrease of $135,291,219, while imports were $210,726,185, a gain of $76,581,349. Silver Exports Decline. Silver exports totaled $97,981,732, a decline of $10,846,995, and imports were $09,400,736, a decrease of §2,207,- 26. The excess of $28,5681,356 of ex- s compared with an excess of $37,- 20,825 for the year previous. The excess of gold imports in the face of the decline in the merchandise balance and the large volume of foreign loans floated in this country during the year was attributed by sfficials to the fact that part of the pro” ceeds of loans did not leave the coun- try and to the “flight of the curren- eles from certain European countries,” ‘which, they said, expressed itself not in shipments of gold to the United States, but rather in transferring the proceeds of export sales to this coun- try through international exchange channels. The most significant thing in the {lu.rs statistics was asserted by Mr. cover to have been a 15 per cent increase in exports of finished manu. factured articles. Exports of ma- chinery and vehicles increased nearly 30 per cent, whilé automotive products alone increased more than that. —during . bullding operation. ‘Have you opened that sav- ings account. with us yet?
