A " RO T0 SEE RIVAL OFF Helmy’s Birthday Party Pre- vents Greeting to Perks, British Swimmer. BY GERTRUDE EDERLE. By Cable to The Star. ; CAPE GRIS-NEZ, France, July 16, #Frdnk Perks, this year’s first swim- mer to make the channel swim at- ftempt, took Ooff Wednesday night om the rocks below the lighthouse, ut I was not there to wish him god luck, although I had planned give him a rousing send-off. The reason was that Helmy, the giant ;:vimmer from the land of the Nile, d given a party in celebration of his irthday and we hadn't returned ome when Perks made his start at 1:32 pm. Helmy took pop, Mrs. Pegler, sis- hr Margaret, Joe Costa and wife $nd two Egyptian friends to dinner » 8t a beautiful place about 2 miles m Boulogne, in the direction of aris. Our table was placed in the len. As darkness came and E:mds-hld the moon the waitress rought two oil lamps. We had a g%lk:ioun meal, then returned to ulogne, where we visited the sino and watched the crowds laying roulette. + Helmy put 2 francs on number 3. The little red ball rolled around the wheel and settled on that number, Helmy won .15 francs on his brief nl.ay ‘We were all as pleased as if had been a fortune and proceeded fo the Princess Hotel, across the su-eet, where we danced. It was the rst time I had bedn out late since ro arrived here, and I was so tired hat I went to sleep in the auto- bile on the way home. Having tumbled into_bed, I was sleeping soundly when Helmy called us to say he had found a note in his room stating that Perks was starting. The. Blondau Hotel ,proprietor said he would drive us to the lighthouse to search for signs of the boat accom- panying the swimmer. We all put on coats and sweaters over our Jumped into a car and went to the rocks. Through a dense fog we thought we discerned a tiny light, but it might have been merely imagination. Yesterday was most unpleasant, with a howling wind and the sun ab- sent. 'We were sorry Perks had such @ bad day for his trial. He had been training in Dover, but this side of Eder 1" vr.t?tuu"h.:od ‘n’i fodd t rie to 0l a lebs frequent intervals than is usuall; done. - She was given the llquld noufl.hmm t of chocolate:every’ h last During my 'ueeu-ml swim, I was fed every halt hour after I had been in the water three hours. Charles Toth, who swam the ehum-l in 1923, one of the swimmers whom I trained, ate nothing du hh swim but the yolks of eggs ¢ensed milk. 'rwo yolks were with the contents of each can of con- densed milk, Three hours started on his momentous swim, ate ‘a large steak. He was times during his crossing. Helmy took coffes and mfly other awful things last year whén he tried to swim the channel. I do-not approve of dope for a swimmer, and I call brandy “dope.” I would never give a swimmer brandy unless I had. given up all. hope that he would com- plete the swim and there was one chance in a million that brandy might work as a miraple. But so long as ;\:fl there was a spark of hope left I would not give any alcoholic stimu- lant. In the case of Miss Ederle, who has never drunk any alcoholic bever- ages, I think the administering would do much more harm than good. (Copyright. 16%8.) (GRANTED STATE CHARTER. EDERLE'S FOOD WATCHED. -?rflnerto(llveflmhh‘h Swim She Eats in Practice. | BY THOMAS WILLIAM BURGESS, . Trainer of Gertrude Ederle. + CAPE GRIS-NEZ, July 16.—~One of the most difficult problems with which the trainer of a channel swim- fher and the swimmer himself has to_contend is that of food. 'While the swimmer 1s ifi the Water it is mecessary to induce as much bodily heat as possible to com- bat the effects of the water and the cold air; e.nd weakness is the natural ult of hours of strenuous efforts. Ithough heat is most desired, it is unwise to give the swimmer hot , because eating hot food in the oold’ water will cause indigestion. fierfium the warmest food that can administered is lukewarm beef or cocoa, neither of which is par- ::ula.rly palatable when a person has been swimming £or several hours md rflgeeung the slightest gnawing of nger. » : “Will Prevent Hunger. # The wise trainer will not allow his mer to become consclous of nger. I think it is best to feed the er small portions of food at uent intervals so that he never Becomes annoyj rgd by hunger. The mmoml preferénce of the swimmer yuld be consulted about the kinds @f food he is to be fed. On every one ¢t my 32 attempts to swim the chan- mel I ate solid food and I believe that such food agrees with a swimmer ring a trial swim, there is no rea- son why he should not have it when He is attempting to cross the channel. + A swimmer should never experi- ment on food while attempting to @ross the channel. He'should try sev- eral different kinds of food while making practice swims, and then, on the great day, should eat only those things that he has been able to digest best during the practice swims. “During Miss Ederle’s attempt to swim across the channel last year she was given some preparation, the @éxact nature of which I do not lmow. mixed with beef tea. It really not food and I would not’ lflve her the same stuff under any conditions. She has suggested that she be given ghicken salad during her practice: swims, I will give her these things and if they agree with her, I will feed her the same food during her chan- | mel swini.
