According to information received at the office of the chief of Air Corps ‘today, the speedy Curtiss PW-8 met an untimely end at Selfridge Field, Mount Clemens, Mich., several days @go when being landed hy Lieut John J. Williams-of that fleld. The soft and muddy condition of "Selfridge Field was held responsible for the wreck of the plane, for in landing the wheels sank lmo uu turt, the landing gear was wiped off, the plane nosed up and then fell over on its back, causing a “complete wash: out.” The pilot was uninjured. The plane had been in -constant service since the day of its memorable flight. It was equipped with large 7tuel tanks for long cruising radius, “and these had just been replaced by the regular sized gasoline tank. On the very first flight after this change the accident occurred. Alr Corps officers at Selfridge Field explained that the hard usage to which the ship had been subjected in the past was partly responsible for the failure of the landing gear struts and the resultant damage. Lieut. Maughan flew the ship 2,540 miles in the elapsed time of 21 hours 48% minutes, leaving Mitchel Field, New York, just before dawn, and Janding at the Presido, San Fran- cisco, as darkness covered the city. He made four stops on the journey for fuel, Dayton, Ohloy St. Joseph, Mo.; Rock Springs, Wyo., and Sal Duro, Utah,- The first attempt re- sulted in failure.when ‘his plane struck a cow in the fleld at St. Joseph, and he was forced to abandon the second flight at Sal Duro, Utah, when the oil line broke. Since the successful flight the lane has been in pursuit service at| elly and Selfridge Fields. The question of placing it in the Aircraft -Building of the Smithsonian Insti- tution here was raised informally several times, but no official action was taken on the proposal.
