- CLARK CLAIMANTS |2 RECEIVE SETBACK! 7= Stepmother Denies ex- Sena- tor Was Father of Alleged Daughters. " By the Associated Press. BUTTE, Mont.,, July 14—Mrs. Anna A. Clark, widow of William Anderson Clark, former Butte mer- | chant, has added her voice to the many who have testified that, the late Senator William Andrews Clark of Montana was not the father of three ‘women who claim daughters’' shares in the copper magnate's $47,000,000 estate. Mrs. Clark, testifying as-a witness for the heirs of the Clerk estate, de- clared yesterday that as a mald'in the home of the man she later mar- ried, she cared for as children the three claimants—Effle Clark McWi- liams and Alma Clark Hines of Mis- souri and Addie Clark' Miller of Den- ver—and that she married their father, William Anderson Clark; in Montana after he deserted his family at Stewartsville, Mo., in 1879. She told of her marrhgn to the claimants’ father and of how she faced the scorn of her family when she followed the Stewartsville Clark to Montana. She testified that the Stewartsville Clark did not inform her of his in- tention to desert his family; that two or three months after his disap- pearance he wrote to her, and that in subsequent correspondence their mar- riage was planned. They were mar- ried, she said, on October 16, 1880, and thereafter lived in Montama. By a quirk of fate she'and her husband finally came to live in the same city and within a mile of the residence in Butte of Senator Clark. A few perfunctory witnesses, tes- tifylng as to the length of Senator Clark’s residence in Montana, fol- lowed her to ‘the stand and defense counsel rested. Attorneys for the plaintiffs an- nounced that they would introduce rebuttal testimony. TR TR BENEFIT IS PLANNED. Program for Children’s Aid So- ciety to Be Held Tomorrow.
