Clar clerk of the county commissioners. in connection with the annual fax levy | just signed hy the commissioners. The figures referred to show that within the last 10 years the taxable value of the real and personal proper. ty of the county has jumped from $20.990,420 tn $54,251.875. or more than 158 per cent, and that there has been a proportionate increase In the 1ssessment on securities of various kinds. A large part of this growth has been due to the extensive building operations, and the consequent influx of new citizens, in Bethesda and Wheaton districts, although Rockvlille district, which stands third in that re. spect, has aided not a little. Of the £4,044.580 increase in the rnumyn tazable basis. real and person: erty, since the last annual le Be. thesda district supplied $2.485.105, while the increase in assessments on securities in that district during the tame period accounted for $137.545 of the total county increase of $233.445. During the fiscal vear now drawing to a close, the assessed value of real and personal prope in Wheaton district increased $! 155.310, and on securities §97.4° le the value of nal property for taxa in Rockville district during the yvear. The securities owned in Rock- ville district amounted to $61.110. While the assessments on real and personal property increased in all of the other districts of the county dur ing the vear, in a number of the dis- tricts there was a falling off in the value of securities owned. June 1.--A polar bear on a mammoth iceherg float- ing in the Atlantic 1.180 miles from New Vork was reported by passen- gers of the Hamburg-American liner Hamburg, which docked yes- terday. The Iceberg, 2.000 feet long and rearing its apex 100 feet out of the water, was seen when the liner was off the Grand Banks of New Foundland at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, Comdr. Kiel said. The vessel was at one time within eight miles of the herg. Furey was set free in Trenton ves- terday after serving 14 months of an 18-month to seven-vear sentence for carrving concealed weapons. In 1324 Furey was sentenced to one and a half to two and a half years on the extortion charge, but execution of sentence was stayed when he prom ised the judge that if liberated he would confine his aetivities in the fu ture tn raising chickens. Water was turned into the canals and laterals of the North Platte interstate irrigation project yesterday and the farmers were busy throughout the day diverting it into the flelds of thirsty crops. Citizens and farmers were jubilant with the advent of the moisture, which will almost insure bumper har- vests in the valley this season. He accuses James Monteleon, a fellow countryman, who escaped in an automobile. Caporale is stabhed above the heart, in the shoulder and back. He is at the West- ern Maryland Hospital. Caporale was so infuriated that officers had to carry him to the ambulance.
