BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 1.—Prices held firm in quiet trading at the resump- tion of business in the bond market today. As on most other days last week, it was the higher vielding se- curities which attracted the most at- tention. The foreign group came to the front and French bonds devel- oped greater strength. French 7s sold above 90 and French 8s above 103, while French 73s got to 97. These prices compare with 192 highs of 103% for the 8s, 917% for the 7s and 99% for the T Hungarian 7%s were also a feature, running up to par for the first time and then reacting. Mexican bonds also did better today, the strength at one time being quite pronounced. Today's gains camfe on top of ad- vances running from 1 to 6 points last week. In raflway issues New Haven bonds were among the leaders, perhaps in sympathy with the strength in New Haven stocks. - New York, Westches- ter & Boston 414 duplicated the best prices of year and New Haven collateral s of 1940 were in demand. Local tractions were mostly strong, Third Avenue refunding 4 and New York Railways income being especially well bought. Oil and sugar bonds were steady but did nothing more. Changes in the high-grade invest- ment list were very small, most of the legal bonds having about discount- ed the money situation. There was however, good Inquiry for some of the terminal issues, including South- ern Pacific, San Francisco Terminal 4s and Kansas City Terminal 4s. Both Armour_obligati elded fraction- ally. The Real Estate 3'3s got be low 91, which was lower than at a time last week, and the Armours Delaware 5ls got below 93. NEW BOND OFFERINGS. First Homestead Mafi(ed. A Nebraska State historical monu- ment has been erected and dedicated at the site of the original home on | the Daniel Freeman estate, known as the first homestead entry filed under the homestead law in the United States, on land still in the possession of children of Freeman, 19 miles northwest of Wymore, or five miles west of Beatrice. The monument is formed from stone taken from the dismantled State capitol at Lincoln and hauled to the farmstead,-and con- tains an appropriate bronze tablet. Daniel Freeman was a young man at Brownvile, oldest town in Nebraska, when the homestead law became ef- fective January 1, 1863.
