HOME NOTES BY JENNY WREN. ht, and How n fix Planning a home should be a mat- ter of leisure and affection. It is the little thoughtful touch, the individual bit of planning that gives a house its character. = To illustrate: In one house of great charm its builder had taken time to plan this handsome double arch lead- ing from hving room to dining room and contrived to give it a quaint Old ‘World air by setting dish cupboards between the arches. ‘These cupboards, set in the creamy ‘woedwork, have their inner walls and shelves painted a true turquoise blue and make a picturesque setting for: a oollection of fine old pewter. ‘They also supply a very beautiful touch of color to what might have bean just a dark, uninteresting and unlovely opening between two rooms. That was before she had be- come Interested in Merton and a gay evening did not mean enough to- her to take the chance of being seen. How- ever, she had said she would-go and she would keep her word. After all, it might be fun and it wasn’t as if she were going alone with Merton. There would be four of them. = They were on their way home, and Merton had stopped the car hy the side of the road while the four lighted cigareites. His - arm was flung around the back of the seat ‘and Florence was sitting close to him. As he touched the lighted match to the small roll of tobacco he stooped and kissed Florence lightly. At the same time a car passed them. It seemed to Florence later that although she was not looking directly at it, she saw its occupants plainly. One of them was Richard. The color flamed in her cheeks and her heart began to beat wildly. Had Richard recognized her? He had seemed to be looking directly at her and yet she couldn’t be sure. She was wearing a soft sport hat that shadowed the upper part of her face. At the moment the car passed Merton had been bending over her, and yet for some re;son llleI{:ldx ;‘hn Richard had seen and recogn! er. Suppose he spoke to her about it, what could she say? And what about the other occupants of the car. Had they recognized her? She couldn’t be sure who they were, she couldn’t be sure of anything but the fact that she had seen Richard and that she was almost sure he had seen her. But, strangely enough, the others hadn't noticed the car that passed. They were all talking and laughing as though nothing had happened. (Covyright. 1928.) (Continued in Monday's Star.) If a child must have this disease the Spring is a far better time than the Fall, as the fresh air and sunlight will hasten the cure. Whooping cough usually lasts s.x weeks, the old-time formula saying, two weeks coming, two weeks here, and two weeks going. During the initial two weeks the child will show the symptoms of an ordinary cold with running nose and eyes, some temperature and a persistent cough. During the next two weeks the disease is at its height. This is the time when a child cannot eat without vomiting, when repeated pur-. oxysms of coughing tear him to pieces. The flustered mother is at her wits' end to know how to nourish the child during this really dangerous period.
