By the Associated Press. , PHILADELPHIA, May 13.—Signal achievements in science, the me- chanical arts and invention were rec: ognized yesterday in the awards of medals by the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia. Notable were the Amer- ican and foreign awards of the Frank- 1lin medal, the highest honor In the institute’s gift. The American award was made to Samuel Rea, former president of the Pennsylvania. Railroad. The forglln award was conferred upon P’rof. Niels Bohr, director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics, Copenhagen. and was accepted on his behalf by the Danish Minister to the United States,; C. Brun. The Franklin medal was founded in 1913 by Samuel Insull of Chicago. 3 The award to Mr. Rea was stated to be “in recognition of his outstand- ing work In the conception and con- struction of railroads, their terminals, tunnels and bridges and of his emi- nently successful application of the principles of science, economics and human relations to railway engineer ing and administration, in which he displayed vision, imagination and courage of high order.” Atomic Theory Recognized.
