NEW YORK, May 1.—The echarac- ter of buying in the steel market dur- .ng the past weex was again largely for immediate or nearby delivery, but the volume showed no noticeable fall- ing off from the recent rate. Produc. tion appeared to be gradually decreas- ing to conform with the current de- mand although still in excess of new business. Aside from sheets, prices were steady, but confidence relative to the future was largely lacking among buyers. Pig iron was quiet with sales confined to small lots and prices were barely steady. Business in copper has been light both at home and abroad. Home con- sumption {s belleved to be proceeding at a satisfactory rate, but with pro- duction heavy, the market is sup. posed to hinge on the demand abroad, and domestic buyers are evidently disposed to operate cautiously in the absence of export interests. During the past week, forelgn markets have naturally reflected the British labor situation, which seemed to offset the favorable sentimental effect of the French debt settlement, and while -1025-26— . . Tin has eased somewhat despite good buying of June, July and Au- gust by consumers, owing to the de- cline in London. Large American de. liveries were offset by the increase in shipments from China. Prompt straits still command a big premium over futures owing to scarcity on the spot. Léad was less active, the heaviness abroad and possibility of importation of Mexican ore serving to defer pur- chases in anticipation of lower prices. Zinc was_lower, reflecting the de cline abroad and the continued slow domestic demand. Antimony was weak under increased offerings of both spot and future ar rivals. COFFEE FUTURES QUIET. NEW YORK, May 1 (#).—Coffee futures were quiet today, with prices a few points higher on further cover- ing by near months shorts and a little trade buying. The market opened un- changed to 5 points higher, and after selling up to 18.15 for September, showed little further changes. The close was 4 to 10 points net higher. Sales were estimated at 10,000 bags. Closing quotations—May, 17.30; Jul 16.92; September, 16.17; December, 16.82; March, 15.17. Spot coffee quiet. Rio Ts, 193 to 19%; Santos 4s, 22 to 22%. Owing to the holiday in Br: few if any cost and freight offery were received, and there were no mifreis quotations from the Brazilian markets. MFADDEN BILL'S CHANCES IMPROVE Special Status Voted—Local Security Prices—Work to Start on Bank Annex. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Chances lor passage of the McFad- den banking bill appear brighter than they did a fkw days ago. The Repub- lican steering committee in the Senate has voted to sive the bill privileged status along with severat other very important measures now awaiting consideration. It is irntended to take up this measure after the railroad la- bor bill has been disposed of. While neither of these bills are near the top of the list, yet it is expected by their supporters that both will be reached at this session. The general belief that Congress will not adjourn as early as had heen planned by the lead- ers also makes the outlook for the passage of the McFadden bill in some form or other much more probable than it was early last week. GRAIN FUTURES TRADING RESUMPTION FORECAST Informal Conferences Held Be- tween Produce Exchange and Agriculture Officials. By the Associated Press. Informal conferences have been held between officers of the New York Produce Exchange and the Depart- ment of Agriculture, looking toward the resumption of trading in grain futures on the New York Exchange. No formal application has yet been made by the exchange for designa- tion as a grain futures market. Conditions precedent to such action by the department were presented to representatives of the exchange by J. W. T. Duvel, chief of the grain futures ~administration. They in- clude the formation by the exchange of a “business conduct committee”; shall at least equal in grade and qual- ity that described in the covering warehouse receipt, and granting the right of appeal to Federal supervisory authorities to traders who consider deliveries not up to specifications. Buffalo has been proposed as the place of delivery by the New York Produce Exchange, but the depart- ment favors making New York and Buffalo equally eligible. VIRGINIAN MEETING. NORFOLK, Va., May 1 (P).—Stock- holders of the Virginian Railway, who held their annual meeting here today, re-elected the road’s entire directorate, but considered no other matter, offi- cers of the road announced. operations moved in an opposite di- | | deal today to strengthen grain values guarantee by it that grain delivered | parts of the wheat belt did a good Besides, deliveries of wheat on May contracts both here and at Liverpool were meager. The wheat market in Chicago closed firm, 1 to 3% net higher. May (new) 1.64%s to 1641, and July ‘1431 to 1.43%, with corn unchanged to % up, oats at and % to 33 and S advance, and provisions showing 5 to 15 gain. Notwithstanding that all bulges in price led to free selling, the wheat market showed an upward trend from the outset. The forecast was for un settled weather over a wide area, but indicated just cloudy conditions in the Dakotas. Nebraska and western Kan- sas, where ample moisture is badly needed. Meanwhile, the fact that wheat deliveries on Chicago May con- tracts totaled only 10,000 bushels made previous sellers uneasy and led to buy- ing that quickly served to tighten up prices, especially as a decrease in the United States’ visible supply figures on Monday was looked for and per haps some additional falling off in the small stock on hand hege. Slight rain and snow in Alberta Province, Canada, served to empha- size that the weather as affecting the crop outlook is the chief present in- fluence on the wheat market. Current talk was that good general rains on both sides of the Canadian boundary would bring about heavy selling and i decline in prices, whereas persistent lack of rain would have an opposite result. Private crop estimates looked for on Monday are expected to indi- cate a larger vield of domestic Win- ter wheat than was suggested by the |latest Government figures | Corn and oats sympathized with | wheat strength. Large deliveries of jcorn on May contracts appeared to have been discounted in advance. SEEK SARGENT OPINION. Federal Reserve Officials Want Rul- ing on Power Over Branches.
