THE SUNDAY ERMIT EXAMINER SMOOT QUITS JOB OF TESTING AUTO DRIVERS It seems to be a remarkable coin- cidence that most of Officer Smoot's experiences were gained while at the merciesr of feminine drivers. To prove that men sometimes cause gray hairs to multiply on the heads |of permit examiners, Traffic Bureau attaches cite the case of Policeman FFoley, who recently solved an emer- gency involving one in a very prlginll manner. If Examiner Foley's asso™ ciates are to be belleved, this operator, with Foley in the rear seat, began his test by running smack into the inter- section of Fourteenth street ang Pennsylvania avenue with a ‘‘stop’ sign set against him. He halted in the middle of the street car tracks when the traffic officer blew himselt hoarse on his whistle. Examiner { Foley opened the door of the car, t without saying a word, au, shaking his hgad. nt ahead in ignorance of the fact that Foley had beat a retreat, and did not discover the examiner’s ab- sence until several blocks later, when | he failed to get a reply to his persist- ent inquirifes as to what to do next. had to turn around and drive back tof the Trafiic Bureau to find out, his "AR. Policeman Smoot, as previously related, is a brave man. He did not complain of his lot. But his col- leagues and superiors could not help but .iotice the haggard look that in- creasingly haunted his features, as the days went by. They realized that if something were not done for this officer's nerves he would, before long, be a subject for examination himself. So now Mr. Smoot, smiling, sits snugly on the inside of the Traffic Bureau looking out and feeling much better, thank you. S i T Medical Officer Transferred. Maj. Samuel J.
