She herself had been content with it once. But then no one had loved her. She thought of Padraic’s eves and the blue flame in them, and of his warm, ardent voice saying, “Oh. yvou adorable in- fant” How different it was to be called an ‘“adorable infant” from being told that vou wers not a baby, though vou persisted in acting llke one. Would the mistake be worse if she remained with ‘“toler able fondness” and “comfort” and gave up love, or if she lost them in venturing all for love, and love fafled her? A'knock came at the door and Dono van went to answer it, returning with a stony countenance and Padraic’s basket of orchids. She knew who had sent them, too, without opening the little white en velope tied among the ferns that framed them “'You'd better let me put you to bed and them in the bathroom,” said Donovan. “It ain’t going to do you no good breathing all that strong scen: “‘But it's delicious! Celia, who craved to be alone with her orchids and her thoughts of Pa- draic. became suddenly meek. “T'll go to bed now if you think it best."” she said. “I've thought it best for the last hour and a half," said Donovan. “You look like a corpse alongside them pur. ple things.” “Oh, Nurse!" protested Celia again, but inclined now to laugh.
