CHICAGO, March 26.—Active trad- ing and higher prices today in the wheat market here accompanled word of a decided fresh advance in quota- tions at Liverpool, where scantiness of world shipments and a better de- mand from continental Europe were strengthening factors. Reports that three days of high winds in Nebraska may have serlous- ly damaged Winter wheat tended further to lift values here. Advices were also at hand that with shipping demand increasing and with receipts negligible entire deple- tion of stocks of wheat at St. Louis appeared imminent. Chicago open- ing prices 13 to 21 higher; May (new) 1.58a1.68% and July 1.37%a 1.38%, were followed by further gains. Assertions that for the present the heavy country marketing of corn is over helped to strengthen values of corn and oats. After opening % to 3% higher, May 73% to 73%, the corn market: scored aditional upturns. Oats started 3% to 4 up, May 39% 39%. and later continued to harden. Provisions were responsive to the advance of grain values. WHEAT— May (new ). told) 878 BB 14 5 LT . i METAL MARKET. NEW YORK, March 26 (#).—Cop- per quiet; electrolytic, spot and fu- tures, 13%al4. INBOND NARKET Inquiry Still Brisk for High- Grade Rail Legal Issues. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 26.—Demand for high-grade investment bonds was still strong today. The fact that trading was in small volume was due more to & lack of offerings than to any scarcity of buyers. Today it was the old line issues which were in the greatest favor, such as Baltimore and Ohio first 438, New York Central bs, Norfolk and Western consolidated 4s, Northern Pacific prior llen 4s and Pere Marquette 5s. Other bonds for which inquiry was good included Kansas City Terminal 4s and the New Orleans, Texas and Mexlico issues, which had been declared legal in- vestments for New York State savings banks on Thursday. All United States Government bonds were firm with the greatest strength in the Treasury 4748, and in the Liberty 314s, the last ;\an;‘ed duplicating their previous 1926 high. Weak spots in the speculative list were not as numerous as earlier in the week. There were, however, some fairly sharp declines, most conspicu- ous of which was Chicago Railways . This Chicago traction bond closed at 70% and opened at 70, rapidly selling down below 69, where it was lower than at any time in the past two years. New York Railways in- come 6s weakened under unusually heavy offerings. Empire Gas and Fuel 7133 were down fractionally. perhaps because of the competition of the new 6%s, but the Joss was not im- portant. The bonds of the Cuban sugar producing companies were steady all through the selling of cer- tain sugar stocks on the exchange, and some of them were higher, Manati 71%s gaining at one time a full point. Saks & Co. 7s moved up nearly a point. Bethlehem Steel bonds held their ground well. In the railroad group Missouri Pa- cific 6s were a little higher. Pressure on the French issues let up for a time today. Some of the honds had small fractional recoveries. Hungarfan 71;s were weak, German 7s were heavy, while the Belgian is- sues were practieally unchanged. The new $7800,000 American Gas and E! ctrio per cent debenture bonds afferad today at 993 went very | well. COTTON IS STEADY AT SLIGHT DECLINE Some Selling Occurs on Easier Late Cables From British B the Associated Press, NEW YORK, March Cotton fu- tures opened steady; May, 18.73; July, 18.28; October, 17.67; December, 17.35; January, 17.27. The market was steady at a de- cline of 1 to 7 points and sold about 6 to 9 points net lower during the early trading under liquidation by re- | cent buyers, Southern and local sell- | ing. Cold rains were reported in the South, which were considered un- favorable for the coming crop start, but the prospect was for clearing weather, while there is plenty of time i for _crop preparations, and there was { probably some selling on the easier | off to 18.71, and October to 17. these prices at the end of the first half “hour. Private cables from Liverpool re- ported some trade calling in the mar- ket there, but complained of a con- tinued poor demand for cotton cloths and yarns. EW YORK. March 26 (#).—Cotton fu- at.a net’ decline of 4 to cember, 16. January, 16.95 bid. The market opened easier, although Liver- pool was_better than due and the weather map showed much rain and cold in the belt. First trades showed losses of 4 to 9 points and old crop months eased off a point or two after the call to 17.98 for May and 17.64 for July, or 6 to 7 points below yester- day’s close. New crop months which owed the most weakness at the start, did not decline below the initial figures of 16.96 for October and 16.98 for December. The easier tone was due. to fears of bearish week end sta- tstics and the official forecast for better weather in the belt. NEW ORLEANS. March 26 (#).—Cotton {utures closed steady at a net decline of & to 10 points, Sy uly eobe December Januars . Close. 08 L08b-.17a 16:97b ‘WILL REDEEM NOTES.
