Special Dispatch 1o The NEW YOREK, March —The stock market rallied in the late afternoon today, after a peciod of further weuk- ness in the early trading. The decline had been going on for over a week, so that it as natural To expect some druwing down of prof- its on the short side. But the re- bound was small as compared with the previous decline. The situation was unsettied at the end. Baldwin Locomotive was the weak feature. With only 200.00 shares out standing, the greater p which ave closely held, it is not easy to put ihrough an operation on the bear side. But today there had been “nough short covering to make the position of the stock more vuinerable, and a sudden attack met with more “uccess than has attended similar ex- periments during the last few weeks. Raldwin had closed at 104%, against the high of 1083 Wednesday morn- as driven down below par, n dropping asain. Hudson Motor drew close to 80, where it was off 43 points from its re- cent high. Bethlehem Steel Will Redeem Out- standing 8 Per Cent Preferred. NEW YORK, March 25 (P).—Di- rectors of the Bethlehem Steel Cor- poration have called for redemption on July 1 the company’s outstand- ing 8 per cent preferred stock at a price of $1156 a share. Factories were running, it was stated, at better than a normal rate of production. 4 Report of the Detroit Employers Assoclation for last week, issued to- day, was pointed to in supoprt of the contention that there was no cur- tallment of production. NEW YORK, March 25.—As far as strictly high-grade Investment issues went the bond market today exhibited total indifference to the influences which were operating to put down speculative securities. There was no bidding up of prices, but all offers, particularly of sizeable blocks, were readily taken and it was evident the market could have absorbed much larger amounts. In the United States Government bond list demand for the tax-exempt Liberty 3% kept up and the previous vear's high was duplicated. The inci- dent that attracted the most attention was the rush to buy New Orleans, Texas and Mexico issues on the an- nouncement that the New York State Banking Department now regarded these bonds as legal investments for savings banks. ON FOREIGN REPORTS Falling Off of Estimated Shipments From Argentina Felt in Chicago. By the Associated Press. Wheat scored an early upturn today, influenced by unexpected strength of the Liverpool market and by a decided falling off in this week's estimated shipments from Argentina. Total &hipments were only 2,516,000 bushels as against 3,364,000 bushels last week. Quincy Peters, surviving membx of the firm of Carlisle Peters, inves ment bond dealers, in the Transports tion Building, has retired from busi ness and closed the firm's office. The firm has been dealing in bonds preferred stocks and other invest ment securities since January 21, 1922 when Mr. Peters and the late J. M. Carlisle formed a partnership.
