BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 16.—Demand in today’s bond market was relatively stronger for the high-grade securities. peculative issues were highly irregu- r, some of them recovering from the setback of Monday and some failing to rally at all. In the strictly investment group. it was the first mortgage rafls legal investments for savings banks that were wanted. The difficulty was to fine large blocks of desirable issues. Tor such, the market has been pretty well cleaned up temporarily at least. During the past 10 days, one Wall % | reacted easily from their recent high. 4 | Gtah Coppdr (5). & | White Eagle (2 street house has bought for its cus- tomers $5,000,000 in this grade of bonds, all ‘of which have been taken out of the street. he feature in the forelgn group was again the Belgian issues, which continued very heavy, influenced by the same factors that affected Bel- glan exchange. Belgian 6s, 61¢s and s all made new lows on the move- ment after an early rally. This sell- ing today was not accompanied as on Monday by weakness elsewhere in the foreign list. The South Ameri- can obligations were at times actually strong. Argentine 6s, serles A, of 1957, touched par for the first time. State of Sao Paulo 8s, 1950, crossed 104 to within a fraction of the best previous price. Bolivia 8s and Rio de Janelro 8s of 1947 gained frac- tlonally. So dld Montevideo 7s. Price movements in the speculative rafls were mixed. Seaboard refunding 4s opened down a half point, but the Consolidated 63 made a good récovery. Missour{-Kansas-Texas adjustments sold off slightly, notwithstanding the raising to $6 of the dividend rate on the preferred stock, into which the bonds are convertible. Peoria and Eastern incomes, Chesapeake and Ohio convertible 51 and Delaware and Hud- son convertible 5s were all higher. Among_utilittes Manila Electric 7s Convertible oil bonds were mostly higher, and there was an advance of a point in International Mercantile Ma- rine 6s. The $3,500.000 Canadian Rafl and Harbor Terminals first 613s, due 1951, offered at par, were oversubscribed. DIVIDENDS hPefiod. Rate.
