AN ORIENTAL EIGHT-FOLD SCREEN. used need not be absolutely smooth, as the entire frame will be covered with the material. The panel frames should be covered before the hinges are attached. If paper or thin mate- rial is to be used, it is well to cut a plece of cardboard or heavy compo- board that will exactly fit the panels to their outer edges, and tack it onto the frame with flat-headed tacks. This will hold the material smooth and pre- vent the inside edges of the frame from showing through, and give the finished appearance desired. Almost any fabric that has a de- corative value may be used for scroens of this sort. Paper, leather, porcelain, glass, tapestry, silk, satin, velveteen, chintz cretonne, crewel em- broidery, brocades, plain black ofl- cloth and lnens printed in scenic de- signs are all excellent for the pur- pose. Another attractive material for such screens is table damask. Old tablecloths may be dyed exquisite shades and appiied succeesfully to the trame. Wall paper lends itself easily to screen making, and it comes in so many and varied patterns and qual- ities that the line to chooss from is certainly a wide ‘one. Japanese pa pers in plain gold or silver, or gold or siiver showing a tiny all-over dull self-colored design are lovely. There are also colored papers powdered with ®old. One in orange and gold is very effective and could be toned down by dark varnish. If paper is used. it must be put on with wall paper paste to which half 2 cupful of molasses is added for every 2 pounds of paste. 1f fabric is used as a covering for a screen, fasten the material edge of the frame with spaced about 6 inches apart stretch tightly across the frume, Ing at the centsr und working toward both ends. When this 1s done, ad- ditional tacks can be driven in to stretch the material more evenly, mak- ing the spacing about 3 inches long. The top and bottom must be tacked last, and It is slways best to work from the center to the ends. If a plain sateen or other simple gains averaging more than 15 per during the vear.
