HUGHES. Secured and Unsecured Bonds. Having made the distinction be- tween bonds and stocks, the two prin- cipal forms in which {nvestment se- curitles come, it is now In order to say something about the various kinds of bonds. fication is possible along a great varlety of lines. Per. haps the simplest is that which divide: bonds into secured and unsecured. A bond may be defined as a formal acknowredgment of indebtedness companied by a promise to discharge the debt on agreed-upon terms. A bond is secured when a remedy is provided for the lender in the event of the borrower not keeping the agr ment. The difference can be made plain by a comparison with a transaction btween two private individ “A” loans “B"” $1,000 and take; note for the amount, “A secured bond. If, however, a mortgage on “B’s” house or farm as a pledge for the loan, “A’ has a secured bond. In the latter case, the borrower does not pay the pri pal when due and the interest mean- time, the lender can foreclose the mortgage, sell the property and reim- burse himself. If, on the other hand, he has only a note to protect him, the best he can do is to bring suit in court and if the borrower is able to pay a judgment the lender gets his money back, otherwise not. Now it is at once evident that a se- cured bond Is better than an unse- cured bond, of the same borrower. It does not follow that all secured bonds are better than all unsecured bonds. As a matter of fact, the investment admittedly the safest in all the world, \a United States Government band, is an unsecured obligation. If the United States should default the owner of a Liberty bond would have no remedy. There is nothing upon which he can foreclose. Of course, it is unthink- able that the United States Govern- ment should fail to keep its pledged word. Whenever there is the slight- est doubt about the matter security becomes important. For instance, the bonds of certain newly established European countries are protected by a mortgage on cer- tain revenues of those governments simply because lenders will not take the chance of making a loan under any other conditions. The necessity of giving security in the case of a gov ernment-is a sign of credit weakness. Some corporations are so strong that they do not have to give security for their loans, but they are comparative- ly few. The rule is to give the prefer- ence to the secured loan of a corpora- tion, but to move cautionsly when a government can sell a bond only by mortgaging something first, e v G| Pearl Chokers, COTTON SELS OF AS WEEK BEGS Foreign Cables Lower and Less Demand Noted in Goods Trade. the N future YORK, Febru opened barely s ay, 19.62; July, 18.95; October, December, 17.90.
