Special Dispatch to The Star MOUNT RAINIER. December 17.— A boom for J. Enos Ray for governor was auspiclously launched at the xth annual banquet of the Mount Ralnier Citizens' Association last night at Blueblrd Hall Approximately three hundred mem bers of the assoclation, woman's auxil- iary, Woman's Civic League and guests participated in the festivities. On the conclusion of the banquet |R. C. Lawrenson introduced Robert Joy first mayor of Mount Rai- i astmaster. Gilbert Hughes | reviewed accomplishments of the a | sociation, of which he is president, and Mrs. D. J. Orcutt, president of the arxillary and of the clvic league, spoke of the accomplishments of these organizations. In bringing befors the gathering | Mr. Ray's name for governor, Mr. Joyce callad attention to the ct that Mr. Ray was born in Chillum dis triet, of which Mount Raiunfer is now a part; that while a member of the Legislature he was chairman of tne corporations committee of the House, when elected the second time, was made speaker. State Committee Head. this he was State auditor, and now is chairman of the Demo- cratic State central committee and head of the State Tax Commission. ‘But _despite these honors.” de. clared Judge Joyce, Yhe remains loyal | to the people of the community where | he first saw the light of day.” Mr. Ray manifestly was surprised | by the announce He could not say what the fu- After ment. He felt that the compliment was as undeserved as it was unexpected. He. felt that, should the honor of the nomination | fall upon his shoulders, he could at least depend upon the support of his home people, and that if his party called upon him he would not shirk what he would consider his duty to the Democratic party. He referred to the rapid develop- ment of Washington and surround- ing territory. The construction of the new bridge across tha Potomac River would undoubtedly mean that many would seek homes ir Virgina. He thought that the people of Mary- land, adjolning the District of Co- lumbla, should be wide-awake and see that inducements are offered homeseckers in Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties. He recom- mended a federatlon of citizens' and similar associations in Prince Cieorges County, and thought the county should follow Montgomery County in pro- testing the construetion of the pro- posed belt line around Washington. Tells of W. R. and E. Growth. C. Melvin Sharpe, executive secre- | tary ~ Potomac Electric Power Co., 'spoke of the growth of the Washing- ton Railroad and Electric Co. under the direction of Fresident W. F. Ham, and referred to the marked de- | crease in accidents on the company's lines during the past several years. |He sald that the company's slogan | was “service,” and that while critl- |cism and complaints were to be ex- | pected, the company stood ready at {all times to do everything in its power to make both the rallway and electric | service the very best possible. He llhought the waiting station at Mount Rainier should be improved. County Commissioner George N. Wells spok= briefly. The high spot in the entertainmes portion was the Pemberton I featuring the modern craze, “Ihe Charleston,” and “I'm Looking for Someone’s Heart,” by the noted prima donna, Miss Pat Sullivan, assisted by six girls.
