It was explained by J. B. Gordon, head of the Sewer Department, that it has taken the District 30 years to build up its sewer labor force, and because of the many elements entering into sewerage work ordinary laborers cannot be used. Basing figures on last year's work, it will take $325,191 for the necessary sewerage extension work during the next seven months. The demand for sewers since July 1 has been 50 per cent greater than for the same perlod last vear. This year $275,000 was appropriated for sewer extension work, $127,885 of which was used to pay for work contracted the year before. A deficlency appropriation of $125,000 was granted, making a total appropriation for last year of $276.- 000, as against this year of $275,000 and an increase of 50 per cent in de- mands, according to Mr. Gordon. The situation is described by Dis- trict officlals as “acute.” The butld- ers declare they are almost helpless to continue new work without water and sewers.
